Trimble Extends its BIM-to-field Capabilities

Trimble (USA) has introduced the first integration of SketchUp file import capabilities into the Trimble Field Link layout software. By supporting model data from Tekla, Autodesk and now SketchUp, Trimble has extended its capabilities in bringing constructible Building Information Modelling (BIM) solutions from the office to the field. Recently acquired by Trimble from Google, SketchUp Pro is used by architects, general, steel and concrete contractors, and mechanical, engineering and plumbing (MEP) contractors to easily create 3D models for visualisation of residential and commercial building construction projects. The Trimble Field Link layout software is part of Trimble's construction layout solutions that... (read more)

Joint RICS/CICES lecture – Survey4BIM

Joint RICS/CICES lecture – Survey4BIM – speaker: Barry Gleeson , UEL University Square Stratford campus (https://goo.gl/maps/DWF6xdhw3AB2) Speaker: Barry Gleeson MRICS is Programme Engineering Manager for BIM and a stalwart member of the Survey4BIM group. Survey4BIM has successfully highlighted several (5) key geospatial elements that will derail adoption of level 2 and 3 BIM and this joint lecture will focus on the groups work to date (on Accuracy) and its future work programme (Interoperability). Although it might seem that BIM has gone off the boil in the UK of late this is not the case and BIM has essentially started to... (read more)

The Rail BIM 2030 Roadmap Project

The Rail BIM 2030 Roadmap has been developed collaboratively by the Korea Railroad Research Institute, Yonsei University and the Korea Rail Network Authority. It explains the five phases of building information modelling (BIM) adoption and diffusion strategies from 2018 to 2030 for the advancement of the South Korean railway industry in the 4th Industrial Age (‘Industry 4.0’). We asked Professor Ghang Lee, director of the Building Informatics Group (BIG) at the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, five questions in order to find out more about this project. Can you please briefly explain... (read more)

The Need to Integrate BIM and Geoinformation

Building Information Modelling: Essentials and Issues
In the construction industry, business relationships are often short term and one-off. There are many unique processes and activities. The resulting complexity and fragmentation may obstruct quick and effective exchange and integration of information and thus hamper project progress. Building information modelling (BIM) is aimed at preventing mismatches in information exchange between the many stakeholders. Although BIM has come a long way in this respect, there are still challenges to overcome. The authors explain the essentials of BIM and discuss issues. (By Sisi Zlatanova, The Netherlands, and Umit Isikdag, Turkey) Building Information Modelling (BIM) evolved from supporting the design and... (read more)

Software Platform Accelerates As-built BIM Workflow

ClearEdge3D has announced the release of its newest software platform, EdgeWise BIM Suite, which can make the process of creating Revit building models considerably faster than traditional workflows. The platform, which consists of the company’s EdgeWise MEP and EdgeWise Building software, uses new technology developed through a National Science Foundation research grant to automatically extract piping, conduit, round ducting, walls and windows from laser scan point cloud data. During the software’s development phase, the ClearEdge3D team worked closely with the Revit product team to fully integrate the EdgeWise technology with Revit, creating a powerful as-built modelling toolset within the Autodesk... Advancing BIM Software Interoperability in China

CABR Technology (CABRTech), China, and Bentley Systems, USA, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) establishing a long-term partnership to advance building information modelling (BIM) software interoperability in China. As a first step, CABRTech will facilitate data exchange between its PKPM structural design products and Bentley software. This initiative will provide increased information mobility among the users of PKPM software and all Bentley Integrated Structural Modelling (ISM)-enabled products, including AECOsim Building Designer, streamlining BIM workflows and resulting in increased productivity and enhanced project quality. Under the MOU, CABRTech and Bentley also will initiate an in-depth study and collaboration to research... (read more)

3D Modelling Application for BIM Projects

OS Model Builder is a recently launched visualisation tool that can support projects, including Level 2 BIM activities, and was developed to save the construction industry and its clients’ time and money when planning future projects. OS Model Builder is the result of an exciting new collaboration between Cadline and Ordnance Survey (OS) to provide Autodesk Infraworks 360 customers with a single source of Great Britain’s most accurate and up-to-date collection of geographic data, all presented in a pre-configured CAD-ready file that can be used to create 2 and 3D building or infrastructure models in minutes rather than days or weeks. The application... (read more)

Time for Point Cloud-based BIM Models?

Why base the terrain model in infrastructure projects on 'old' contour maps when you can get a fresh and more accurate representation of the terrain based on laser scanning? That's the question posed by Håkon Andresen, business developer at Blom, a European service provider of surveying, processing and modelling of geographic information. This is a timely question since the laser scanning technology and modelling technology is fully available. In fact, most large-scale mapping projects in Scandinavia today produce point cloud models using laser scanning from aircraft. Yet, most often it is traditional contour maps that are still being used in... (read more)
