The Need to Integrate BIM and Geoinformation

Building Information Modelling: Essentials and Issues
In the construction industry, business relationships are often short term and one-off. There are many unique processes and activities. The resulting complexity and fragmentation may obstruct quick and effective exchange and integration of information and thus hamper project progress. Building information modelling (BIM) is aimed at preventing mismatches in information exchange between the many stakeholders. Although BIM has come a long way in this respect, there are still challenges to overcome. The authors explain the essentials of BIM and discuss issues. (By Sisi Zlatanova, The Netherlands, and Umit Isikdag, Turkey) Building Information Modelling (BIM) evolved from supporting the design and... (read more)

3D Modelling Application for BIM Projects

OS Model Builder is a recently launched visualisation tool that can support projects, including Level 2 BIM activities, and was developed to save the construction industry and its clients’ time and money when planning future projects. OS Model Builder is the result of an exciting new collaboration between Cadline and Ordnance Survey (OS) to provide Autodesk Infraworks 360 customers with a single source of Great Britain’s most accurate and up-to-date collection of geographic data, all presented in a pre-configured CAD-ready file that can be used to create 2 and 3D building or infrastructure models in minutes rather than days or weeks. The application... (read more)

New Autodesk Technologies Unveiled for BIM

Autodesk has unveiled several highly interesting new technologies for Building Information Modelling (BIM) at its annual user conference, Autodesk University. With these announcements and numerous other recent innovations, Autodesk continues to extend BIM value across the full lifecycle of the built environment for Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) professionals in the building and infrastructure industries. Autodesk is expanding the reach of BIM on multiple fronts – into conceptual design on one end of the spectrum and into construction on the other.  Their advancements are empowering professionals to move from designing objects and simply representing their ideas in 2D and 3D... Time for Point Cloud-based BIM Models?

Why base the terrain model in infrastructure projects on 'old' contour maps when you can get a fresh and more accurate representation of the terrain based on laser scanning? That's the question posed by Håkon Andresen, business developer at Blom, a European service provider of surveying, processing and modelling of geographic information. This is a timely question since the laser scanning technology and modelling technology is fully available. In fact, most large-scale mapping projects in Scandinavia today produce point cloud models using laser scanning from aircraft. Yet, most often it is traditional contour maps that are still being used in... (read more)

5 Questions about BIM and GIS

Q&A with Chris Andrews, senior product manager 3D at Esri
There has been much debate on the synergy of building information modelling (BIM) and GIS (geographic information systems). This makes for a potentially powerful combination, but what is the best way to maximise the advantages of the two? Not surprisingly, data plays a crucial role in delivering on the promise of transforming infrastructure design and construction. At 'GIM International' we decided it was high time to ask a renowned expert from the field to share his views with our readers. Chris Andrews, senior product manager 3D at Esri, answers five key questions about the journey towards optimal integration. BIM and... (read more)

China’s BIM Advancements and Industrialisation of its Building Industry

Bentley Systems today reported respects in which China sets the pace globally for building information modelling (BIM) advancements. This year, the independent juries of the Be Inspired Awards selected nine Chinese projects among 54 finalists, an unprecedented performance. In particular, the Chinese building industry is rapidly applying BIM advancements to achieve the benefits of ‘industrialised’ processes. Mr. Jiefeng Xu, CEO of CABRTech, the software unit of the China Academy of Building Research, addressed the Conference’s Building Forum about the industrialisation of the building industry and CABRTech’s adoption of Bentley’s BIM platform for its new PKPM-BIM software product. CABRTech, the leader... (read more)

New BIM 3D Layout Solution for Construction

Topcon Positioning Group has announced a new BIM solution: the LN-100, the world’s first 3D positioning system designed specifically for construction layout. Topcon’s LN-100 introduces seamless integration and flow of project data from the design to the field. The unit provides straightforward operation, removing the intimidation factor and reducing the learning curve in performing construction layout tasks. The simple design and ease of operation for the LN-100 trips away the complexity associated with advanced surveying instruments, said Eduardo Falcon, Topcon Positioning Group executive vice president and general manager for the GeoPositioning Solutions Group. The workflow is simplified with the seamless... (read more)

BIM: The Leading Role of the Geomatics Sector

Building information modelling (BIM) is a hot topic in architecture, engineering and construction. BIM supports a more intelligent approach to planning, construction and the use of buildings. The geomatics industry is well positioned to take the lead in the management of the geospatial data that plays a crucial role in BIM. To give a good impression of the various aspects of BIM, its integration with geospatial technology and the challenges connected with BIM when surveying, ‘GIM International’ has prepared a special webpage dedicated to building information modelling. With articles ranging from ‘BIM: the New GIS for the Industry’ to ‘The... (read more)

3D Aerial Laser Maps Add Value to BIM Projects

3D models produced from aerial laser scanners are being used by survey company Greenhatch Group to help inform a range of building information modelling (BIM) projects. Downloaded from aerial mapping company Bluesky’s online Mapshop, the highly accurate and detailed models are utilised within the group’s BIM software from Autodesk, providing real-world context to measured survey and laser scanned data. The Bluesky height (Lidar) data also gives Greenhatch up-to-date and accurate information for areas that may be inaccessible or otherwise out of bounds.  The Bluesky photogrammetric models are invaluable when integrated alongside models produced on the ground from either traditional survey... Combining BIM and GIS for a Sustainable Society

Community-scale Assessment of Energy Performance
Nikken Sekkei Research Institute in Tokyo, Japan, has developed a vision for cities to help them choose an energy optimisation strategy for neighbourhoods comprising a variety of building types. The optimisation of energy consumption is approached from an area-wide standpoint. The added value of the method for city renewal programmes has been demonstrated based on a central district in the Japanese capital. Japan has low energy resources and a high population density. That provides extra stimulation to develop ecofriendly urban planning. City and environmental designs use low carbon footprint solutions as their starting point, and planners, urban designers, architects, engineers... (read more)
