Bentley Expands BIM Modelling Possibilities for Major Projects

Bentley Systems, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, has announced the availability of AECOsim Building Designer CONNECT Edition. This is Bentley’s new building information modelling (BIM) application designed for building projects of significant size and engineering complexity, and which are typically characterised by the challenges of combining vertical construction and horizontal infrastructure (like roads, railways, utilities, etc.). On such projects, design and project delivery firms often have broad responsibilities for multiple project delivery disciplines and across subcontractors and joint-venture organisations. Users of AECOsim Building Designer V8i have demonstrated its versatility in a wide range of... (read more)

BIM Market to Reach US$18.8bn by 2024

The value of the global building information modelling (BIM) market has been projected to reach US$18.8 billion by 2024, up from a valuation of US$3.6 billion in 2016. The 'Global Building Information Modelling Market' report, published by Esticast research and consulting, found that emerging countries in Southeast Asia and Europe will be major drivers of this projected expansion, with rapid growth propelled by infrastructure development to support rapidly growing populations in nations such as India and China. The report divides the BIM market into application areas, defining commercial, residential, institutional, infrastructure and industrial segments. Geographically, the market is segmented into North America, Europe,... (read more)

Autodesk and Esri Partner up to Bridge the BIM-GIS Gap

Autodesk and Esri have announced the start of a new relationship to bridge the gap between BIM and GIS mapping technologies. Together, Autodesk and Esri plan to enable a broad range of industries to gain better context by visualising data of the man-made world, the environment, citizens and the networks that weave it all together. It is important to consider the needs of future generations during the design and building of projects today, said Jack Dangermond, president of Esri. The benefits of partnering with Autodesk will include securing sustainable resources for the growing population, a responsible human footprint on our... (read more)

Pointfuse Showcases New Scan-to-BIM Workflow at Digital Construction Week

At this year's Digital Construction Week, Pointfuse demonstrated a new scan-to-BIM workflow, aimed at bringing reality capture to building information modelling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) practitioners. Pointfuse software converts the millions of individual measurements captured by laser scanning and photogrammetry into usable 3D mesh models. The ability to classify objects within Pointfuse, both automatically and manually, has had a huge impact on how as-built data is used within the construction workflow.   New features also on show at Digital Construction Week, which took place from 16-17 October at Excel, London, included streamlined classification to ensure maximum efficiency and... What Do BIM, GIS, IoT, BMS, Telemetry and CAD All Have in Common?

Over the last three years, building information modelling (BIM) has undergone rapid development around the world. The value chain of design, construction and operation of built assets faces various challenges of change, some of which are of a technological nature. These include the transition from drawing in 2D to modelling in 3D with object reference and linked information. There is also an explosive increase in the volume of data on projects, including from new recording methods such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’), lasers, geo-radars, and the increased use of sensors and data transfer devices on the Internet of... How Industry 4.0 and BIM are Shaping the Future of the Construction Environment

The construction industry is on the cusp of a new industrial age. The fourth industrial revolution, or ‘Industry 4.0’, will see construction coming in line with more digitally developed industries. This will revolutionise not only how physical structures are designed, built and maintained, but also how they are subsequently used, believes Mark King from Leica Geosystems. (By Mark King, EMEA BIM Solutions Manager, Leica Geosystems) What it means in reality is open to interpretation and the ability to future-gaze. Some anticipate it will mean the use of smart materials and technologies to make our buildings intelligent. Others envisage that it... (read more)

Datumate Launches Field Data Analytics Cloud Platform

Datumate has announced the introduction of DatuBIM, a field data analytics and BIM cloud services platform that transforms the labour-intensive and slow field-data delivery in traditional construction processes into an end-to-end, unified solution. DatuBIM platform includes BIM planning and as-built monitoring and analytics that eliminate cost overruns and save months of delays in project execution. BIM solutions are being adopted globally to enable greater management and control of construction infrastructure projects. However, to effectively measure planned vs. actual progress, identify the cause of project delays, and pinpoint project deliverable risks, BIM solutions require continuous and accurate as-built field data and analytics....
