Further Cooperation Between Leica and Autodesk in Building Construction

Leica Geosystems has announced further cooperation with Autodesk to connect the latest robotic total stations for construction, the Leica iCON iCR70 and iCR80, with the Autodesk BIM 360 layout mobile app, an industry construction management platform. The continued collaboration between the two organisations centres around the expanding role of building information modelling (BIM) in construction. This latest effort creates a seamless workflow, sending positions from the robotic total stations to the mobile app to compare design data, increasing efficiency and productivity from field to office. With the integration to the iCR70 and iCR80 robotic total stations, BIM 360 Layout for... (read more)

Enhanced Integration of Topcon Total Stations with Autodesk

Topcon Positioning Group has announced a new integration that extends its compatibility with Autodesk solutions. The Topcon GT series of robotic total stations is now available for use with Autodesk BIM 360 Layout software. A new update allows GT instruments to seamlessly connect with the BIM 360 Layout application that provides operators the ability to connect coordinated models to the field layout process, helping to increase job site productivity, said Ray Kerwin, director of global surveying products. The GT series is the fastest robotic motor total station in the market with turning speeds of up to 180 degrees per second,... (read more)

Dedicated Building Information Modelling Academy

Crossrail and Bentley Systems, UK, have launched a dedicated Information Academy to provide hands-on technology and software training to the Crossrail supply chain for designing and building the new railway including 3D Mapping and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The Information Academy will capture, develop and share BIM best practices with the Crossrail supply chain. The increased use of BIM by the industry is a key element of the Government Construction Strategy. Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail’s chief executive, said that Crossrail is pioneering the use of Building Information Modelling in Europe on a scale that has not been undertaken before. This has... Increasing Information in Building Models

New Technology Can Significantly Improve BIM
Since the advent of building information modelling (BIM) software in the early 2000s, 3D modelling has significantly improved building design. With regular updates, BIM can also ensure that, during construction, the work progresses according to the design. In practice, however, BIM usually stops once construction starts. This can mostly be attributed to the complexity and cost of gathering accurate and current data needed to update the digital models. The German firm NavVis GmbH is a Munich-based start-up that has developed technology which overcomes these barriers by reducing the cost and increasing the efficiency of capturing and comparing data of physical... Rapid Site Surveys Using SLAM Technology

Access All Areas: Geomatics Systems for the Future
The difficulties of undertaking geospatial surveys, particularly within unstable buildings or underground environments, are well documented. However, the pressure to collect accurate, real-time data within strict timelines has certainly intensified in recent years. With increasingly tight deadlines coupled with strict budgets, conducting surveys of hard-to-access sites can be a real challenge for engineering and construction firms. In this article, Stuart Cadge from indoor mobile mapping specialist GeoSLAM explains how new innovations in building information modelling (BIM) are providing an answer with the aid of simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) technology. As engineering and construction firms grapple with issues such as... (read more)

The Rising Demand for Total Stations and Terrestrial Laser Scanners

How the Booming Construction Business Boosts the Geospatial Industry
Increasing investments in large infrastructure and construction projects, and the rising role of building information modelling (BIM), are expected to drive the market for geospatial equipment. BIM’s close connection with spatial information makes it a familiar landscape and offers rich possibilities for surveyors and other geospatial professionals. Geomares – publisher of 'GIM International' and 'Geo-matching' – has analysed the user data and behaviour of thousands of members of the global geospatial community. It is interesting to see how the market of ‘traditional survey equipment’ such as total stations and terrestrial laser scanners is responding to the growing construction market and... (read more)
