Doubling Airborne Lidar Data Acquisition

Leica Geosystems' Point Density Multiplier technology for airborne Lidar allows the use of a single laser and scanning mechanism to provide over double the data collection productivity of previous systems. This technology will be incorporated into Leica Geosystems' ALS series airborne Lidar Systems.   According to Ron Roth, Product Manager for Airborne Lidar at Leica Geosystems' Airborne Sensors Business Unit, the market constantly demands higher productivity from airborne sensing systems to reduce the equipment and labor costs associated with data collection. The measurement rate of 500kHz gives the industry-leading data acquisition productivity that Leica's customers desire, without the complexity of... (read more)

Aerodata Completes Data Acquisition in The Netherlands

Aerodata Int. Surveys (Belgium) has announced the completion of aerial photography of the province of Zeeland (The Netherlands) with her own digital frame camera, the 90-megapixel Vexcel UltraCam-D, at 15cm GSD (Ground Sample Distance). In three days of perfect weather conditions more than 5.000 photos with stereoscopic overlap were taken over an area of around 3.000kmĀ², after which the data acquisition of built-up areas with 7,5cm GSD commenced. Only a few days later all 15cm imagery had passed quality assurance to enable further digital processing (orthorectification and mosaicking) without any delays. The complete dataset will be ready and will be... (read more)

Aerial Data Acquisition for a Digital Railway

Improving Rail Infrastructure Inspection Efficiency with Enhanced Drone Platform
One of the major challenges facing railway networks is preventing failures in railway tracks. Avoiding potential track malfunctions means inspecting thousands of miles of track, while avoiding risk to inspectors and traffic interference. One innovative inspection methodology is to build a ‘digital railway’ – an accurate and dynamic visualisation tool to identify actual and potential track damage. Relying on the highest-quality data acquisition, a digital railway helps those responsible to make better informed decisions while planning and prioritising rail development, maintenance, repairs and renewal projects. This article outlines the use of such a tool in a UK railway project. In... (read more)

Data Acquisition and Processing Systems for ALOS

Vexcel Corporation (Canada) has taken the lead in providing data acquisition and processing systems for the Japanese Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) launched 23 January of this year. In preparation of this landmark event, Vexcel has developed ALOS ground systems and processing solutions for organisations wishing to leverage the benefits of the spacecraft's onboard instruments: the Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument of Stereo Mapping (PRISM), the Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer-2 (AVNIR-2) and Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) sensors. PALSAR is designed to allow day-and-night observations and is capable of producing imagery up to ten-metres in resolution. The sensor... (read more)

Dielmo Provides Geospatial Back Office for UAV Data Acquisition

Dielmo 3D is offering its geospatial back-office services to UAV, helicopter, fixed-wing and mobile data acquisition companies. For geospatial data acquisition companies that may be new to Lidar and orthophoto mapping or may have a need for increased data production capacity, Dielmo offers complete Lidar and orthophoto production services, thus negating the need to invest in additional expert personnel, software licences and employee training before being able to produce industry-leading geospatial products. With the advent of UAV, Lidar and Imaging technologies, organisations looking to provide these services face the onerous prospect of hiring additional personnel, training, and purchase of software... Vexcel Leads Wireless Data Acquisition Field Study in Alaska

Vexcel Corporation (CO, USA) is conducting a field campaign during the month of June 2005 to characterise the seismicity of Columbia Glacier in Southcentral Alaska using a wireless sensor network developed at its Boulder headquarters. Twenty kilometres of ice have disintegrated in the last quarter century at the ocean-bounded terminus of Columbia Glacier. Vexcel is leveraging wireless technology to gather data and tackle the 'how' and 'why' of this remarkable ongoing glacial retreat in collaboration with scientists at the Colorado University of Boulder and the US Geologic Survey. In 2004, Vexcel conducted a similar 'Generation 1' field campaign at Columbia... (read more)

SA Vineyard Acquisition Programme

Getmapping subsidiary Geosense (South Africa), in partnership with Precision Surveys, has just completed a successful aerial and ground-based acquisition programme in the Western Cape focused primarily on the wine-producing regions. The programme undertaken during February and March of this year captured over 130,000 hectares of vineyards, including farms in CapeTown, Hermanus, Grabouw, Stellenbosch, Franschoek and Piketberg.      The programme provides Viticulturists with true-colour and colour infrared orthorectified imagery as well as a normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) map at high resolution (25cm Ground Sampled Distance). These are used as tools to assess the quality of the vines pre-veraison (prior... (read more)
