GIS Kiosk

Among the many displays and interactive activities at the new Sam J. Racadio Library and Environmental Learning Center in Highland (CA, USA), is a geographic information system kiosk. The kiosk, installed by ESRI, uses ArcReader and ArcGIS Online software to promote the use of maps for environmental purposes by those doing research or who are simply curious about a particular place.     The data necessary to create these maps comes from a variety of sources including the County of San Bernardino, ESRI,, Readers Digest, and the Wildlife Conservation Society.     (read more)

Indispensable GIS

This month we focus on maps and GIS for Early Warning (EW) and Emergency Management (EM): good maps are proven fundamental basics for tackling chaos after tragedies, and GIS plays a major role in evolving better post-disaster management tools. As Köbben says in his feature on page 12, ‘Current technological developments in GIS and collaborative web-based mapping using interoperable geo-webservices and user-generated content could take disaster mapping an important step forward.’ Konecný, this month’s GIMasters and Disasters columnist (page 23), distinguishes four main types of EW and EM map: early-warning maps and images, reference and damage-assessment, and thematic maps. Internet GIS

(Geo-)information is an essential asset for managing protected areas. Although plenty of (geo-)information is in place today, the challenge is to bring it to widely distributed users. The authors developed an information system based on internet GIS which enables dissemination of information over the web to serve users ranging from specialists to policy-makers and the general public.<P>   The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) aims at promoting ‘the establishment and effective management of a worldwide, representative network of terrestrial and marine protected areas’ ( ). Monitoring, analysing and planning action-oriented programmes for conserving ecological wealth in protected... (read more)

Customising GIS

Intrinsic Programming or Object-oriented Methods
GIS software is usually customised using intrinsic programming and writing scripts in conventional programming languages. Since these scripts are run through an interpreter they are slower to execute than well-implemented, object-oriented GIS customisation (OOGC). The author uses case-studies to compare the two methods and illustrates the importance of OOGC in integration of GIS with other information systems.<P> Despite the many GIS programs on the market, none can satisfy the requirements of all users. Functions have therefore to be added to the basic GIS software. Customisation is the process of adding interfaces and functions to a GIS (or modifying existing applications)... (read more)

StreetMapper GIS

StreetMapper GIS, a new version of the mobile laser mapping system with an integrated panoramic camera, has been launched by 3D Laser Mapping and IGI mbH. StreetMapper GIS is easy to mount on any type of vehicle and offers a cost effective solution for collection of street level asset information for use in geographical information systems (GIS) or other desktop software solutions. Being offered as an entry-level version of the StreetMapper 360, the system has a single vehicle-mounted laser enabling high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second and exceptional recorded accuracies.... Free GIS Workshops

Contex Americas will host daily GIS workshops at the ESRI User Conference at Contex's Booth 513. They will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on 12th to 14th July, and at 11 a.m. on 15th July. The free workshops will teach how to digitally convert maps to SHP files and to print in large format. Seating is limited. Interested parties should register online. Contex is giving away an Apple iPad to a lucky booth visitor. The winner will be announced by 22nd July 2010. One-to-one sessions are also available upon request, after having conacted Contex at 877-226-6839. (read more)

GRASS GIS 6.2.0 Released

The GRASS Development Team (Italy) has released GRASS GIS version 6.2.0. This new release adds hundreds of new features; support for the latest GIS data formats, and includes new translations for many languages. The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for spatial modelling, visualisation of both raster and vector data, geospatial data management and analysis, processing of satellite and aerial imagery, and production of sophisticated presentation graphics and hardcopy maps. GRASS combines powerful raster, vector, and geospatial processing engines into a single integrated software package. The GRASS GIS project is developed under the... (read more)
