LandScan - HR Global Population Data

ComputaMaps (South Africa) has release LandScan, a high resolution population dataset currently available with consistent global coverage. Available national census data are collected and aggregated at varying scales and are of varying vintage, sometimes decades old. To address the need for a consistent global, high-resolution population database, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has developed a algorithm to augment census data by incorporating factors known to affect settlement geography patterns. Most national censuses count populations by measuring where people sleep (or reside) rather than where they work or travel. LandScan integrates daytime movements and collective travel habits into a single measure... (read more)

Space-based Dam Monitoring Project Secures New Funding

HR Wallingford, a specialist in water research, will broaden its space-based dam monitoring system, DAMSAT, to include water dams in a bid to reduce the risk of failures. The UK Space Agency has extended the organization’s funding following a pilot project to monitor tailings dams used to store toxic mine waste in Peru. Ultimately the technology could be employed worldwide to reduce the risks to those living downstream of dams. Over the next two years, HR Wallingford will use the ground-breaking DAMSAT software to monitor movement at several water dams in the Cerro de Pasco region of Peru. The system... (read more)

Teledyne DALSA Introduces Remote RadEye X-ray Camera

Teledyne DALSA, a Teledyne Technologies company and a global leader in digital image sensing technology, has introduced the new Remote RadEye HR X-ray camera. It is positioned as a flexible and rugged solution for high-resolution radiation imaging. The Remote RadEye HR is a compact, CMOS-based industrial X-ray sensor, featuring over 2 million pixels in an active area measuring 33x25mm, with a pixel spacing of just 20 micrometres. It is no secret that some X-ray imaging solutions can be bulky and difficult to implement. However, the Remote RadEye HR is slim, lightweight and easily connects to a laptop or PC via... (read more)

Gexcel to Release 3D Software for UAV at Intergeo

Gexcel, Italy, is attending this year’s Intergeo to introduce new 3D software tools and solutions focusing on the most recent release of the JRC 3D Reconstructor software for UAV platforms. In step with the path of the latest technologies in three-dimensional laser scanning and photogrammetry, Gexcel has released the new version of JRC 3D Reconstructor 2.9.1 with a very strong focus on UAVs. UAVs can quickly and cheaply capture georeferenced High Resolution (HR) images. Third-party software typically produces GeoTIFF global images and 3D point clouds of the investigated area. These ingredients can be easily managed in JRC 3D Reconstructor to... (read more)

Mapping with Mobile Lidar

High Speed, Accuracy and Density
The use of Mobile Lidar systems enters the scene when large areas have to be surveyed at accuracy and resolution exceeding those available through aerial photogrammetry, and when using static Lidar is impractical. The Lynx Mobile Mapper captures high-accuracy, high-density points, allowing easy and precise identification of objects. In 2006 Sineco S.p.A, an Italian engineering firm belonging to the ASTM Group, began collaborating with Optech Incorporated, the Canadian manufacturer of laser-based imaging systems, to develop a mobile Lidar system. The first prototype, ready in early 2007, combined two ILRIS-3D laser scanners with a position-and-orientation system (Applanix POS LV 420). This... (read more)
