Modelling the Great Wall of China

Mapping by Airborne and Terrestrial Lidar
The Great Wall of China is one of the largest manmade wonders of the world, comprising many different and irregular structures. We employed airborne Lidar to produce highly accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) to identify areas requiring repair. A terrestrial laser scanner mounted on a tripod was used to improve the terrain model, especially for surfaces covered with dense vegetation. The combined use of airborne and terrestrial laser scanner produced DEMs with accuracies better than 10cm. The easternmost end of the Great Wall, Shanhaiguan Great Wall, is in the city of Qinhuangdao in Hebei. Although the wall is intact, the... (read more)

Free Modelling and Simulation Terrain Databases

The U.S. Army Geospatial Center (AGC) is distributing Modelling and Simulation (M&S) terrain databases along with operational geospatial products on its Common Map Background (CMB) website with the goal of providing a single repository for all geospatial products. There are 161 free synthetic terrain databases that support Live, Virtual, & Constructive (L/V/C) simulations used in training, testing and experimentation hosted on CMB. These M&S terrain databases are available in multiple formats suitable for use in Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF), One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF), Virtual Battle Space 2 (VBS2) and other Department of Defense simulations. Available terrain databases include selected Army... (read more)

Capturing, Modelling and Building the Reality

Interview with Aidan Mercer, Bentley Systems
Bentley Systems held its latest annual Year in Infrastructure Conference in London, UK. The event proved to be an excellent opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at Bentley, a leading provider of software solutions for advancing infrastructure. 'GIM International' talked with Aidan Mercer, global industry marketing director for utilities and government. In this in-depth discussion, he zooms in on the role the company plays in advancing the world’s infrastructure and how geomatics is a key element of many of Bentley’s applications. (By Wim van Wegen, content manager, GIM International) We’re hearing a lot about reality modelling at Bentley’s Year... (read more)

3D Cadastre Modelling in Russia

Assessment of Added Value
Russia has the intention to develop and implement a 3D cadastre. A Russian-Dutch project on 3D cadastre modelling assessed the added value of a 3D cadastre. At present, the system of state cadastre and real estate registration in the Russian Federation is based on the 2D representation of objects including land parcels, buildings and structures. However, the current approach does not cover all situations of the real 3D world. Examples of such situations impeding cadastre and rights registration are: multilevel complexes, intersections of various objects in space, underground and elevated engineering networks, etc. The project included prototype development and a... 3D Urban Modelling Seminar, UK

A seminar on 3D urban modelling and ways in which it can be implemented into your working life is being organised by aerial photography company Getmapping. Held at Bath Spa University (Bath, United Kingdom), on Thursday 19th April 2007, the one day seminar will provide an operational insight into the potential of 3D urban modelling and its uses in the modern work place. Discussions and demonstrations will focus on the growing benefits of 3D modelling, the difference between data sets currently available, a review of the tools currently accessible for analysing data and the new storage/streaming technologies that can be... Pipe Modelling from Point Cloud Data

Elysium, an emerging Japan-based provider in the point cloud data industry, has released a new version of InfiPoints. Version 2.0 highlights enhancements such as pipe modelling and video generation from point cloud data consisting of billions of points. The company has recently been expanding its portfolio from CAD data translation and processing to point cloud rendering technologies. Pipe modelling from point cloud data is one of the key features and enhancements of InfiPoints that provides a competitive advantage for both time and accuracy. Without this capability, it is very time consuming to model piping elements from point cloud data as... (read more)

3D Modelling Application for BIM Projects

OS Model Builder is a recently launched visualisation tool that can support projects, including Level 2 BIM activities, and was developed to save the construction industry and its clients’ time and money when planning future projects. OS Model Builder is the result of an exciting new collaboration between Cadline and Ordnance Survey (OS) to provide Autodesk Infraworks 360 customers with a single source of Great Britain’s most accurate and up-to-date collection of geographic data, all presented in a pre-configured CAD-ready file that can be used to create 2 and 3D building or infrastructure models in minutes rather than days or weeks. The application... (read more)

Integrated Mapping and Modelling Solution for Manned Aircraft

WaldoAir, USA, and Pix4D, Switzerland, have announced the launch of an integrated camera system for use on single-engine aircrafts bundled with aerial image-processing software. This complete system offers the manned aircraft industry the same technological advantages of fast and cost-effective mapping and modelling that the UAV industry has been introducing over the last two years. While UAVs are becoming more and more popular for creating aerial maps and 3D models, their flying range often is limited to sites of up to a few square kilometres. Manned aircraft on the contrary have the reach to cover large areas and have a... (read more)
