Intergeo Digital 2020: A Geospatial Community First

A Pioneering Online-only Gathering of the International Geo-IT Industry
Despite having to improvise, this year’s pioneering digital edition of Intergeo has received a lot of positive feedback. It became the international geospatial industry’s first-ever online-only event after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the live edition from being held in Berlin from 13-15 October as planned. With its high thematic relevance, an interactive and stable online platform succeeded in bringing together members of the geomatics community, even during the current pandemic. A huge number of exhibitors, visitors, speakers and conference attendees seized the opportunity to participate in the fully digital event. Nearly 12,000 participants created a digital profile on the platform.... (read more)

iPhone Equipped with Lidar: Apple Brings Laser Scanning to the Masses

The new iPhone 12 Pro is equipped with a Lidar sensor, marking an encouraging step towards the democratization of photogrammetry and 3D scanning. Smartphones equipped with a laser scanner have been in the pipeline for some time now. The iPad Pro 2020 was Apple’s first tablet to include a Lidar scanner, and now the iPhone 12 Pro is equipped with a Lidar sensor too. This makes it possible to scan the environment, measure distances and recognize objects – putting Lidar mapping at people’s fingertips. The iPhone 12 Pro has a triple-lens camera system: 12MP ultra-wide-angle, wide-angle and telephoto camera, while... (read more)

Pix4D Launches New Ground Image Capture App for 3D Modelling

Pix4D has released a new app for ground imagery acquisition: Pix4Dcatch. The app has been developed to empower users to easily create ground-based 3D models using an iOS mobile device. Users don't need to be experts. They can simply scan the area of interest with Pix4Dcatch. The app records pictures along with GPS positions. Compatible with recent iOS devices, but optimized for the newest iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max with Lidar sensors, scanning is done with real-time 3D meshing for scene completion feedback. This process of giving live feedback enables a workflow that secures optimal results.... (read more)

Bluesky and University of Leicester Partner in Lidar for Detailed Tree Analysis

Bluesky International is co-funding research into the use of Lidar, machine learning and artificial intelligence to create citywide maps of trees enriched with new levels of information in an advanced postgraduate degree study in partnership with the UK’s University of Leicester. A specialist in aerial mapping, Bluesky use aircraft mounted lasers (Lidar) to capture millions of highly accurate measurements called point clouds that detail the earth’s surface and features. Bluesky has already pioneered nationwide maps detailing the location, height and canopy cover of trees and this R&D project is expected to result in an automated workflow for the extraction of tree... Planning Information for the Public Falls Short of Reality

3D Data Visualization for Urban Design and Planning
Working with Pittsburgh’s City Planning Department, a Carnegie Mellon University research team completed an in-depth study of the current use of 3D software for planning tasks and public communication.[1] We started with several assumptions: the public has difficulty understanding most site and building plans and other types of visual material but does understand artist renderings; most architectural and planning firms use 3D visual programmes such as Geospatial and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software; and city planning departments that communicate with the public know how to communicate their visual documents in ways that citizens understand them. We were wrong. Citizens expect... (read more)

3D Smart Digital Model Shows Calamities in a City with One-look Overview

A unique 3D smart digital model has been developed to combine the different streams of data from cities on one common platform, and is the result of the ITEA project PS-CRIMSON, a collaboration of six academic and industry partners from the Netherlands and Canada. With this platform, public safety and disaster management can be improved, as pilot projects in Eindhoven and Vancouver have shown. Researchers from Eindhoven University of Technology developed AI image technology that can detect the location of incidents from an image and retrack the walking routes of people using multiple cameras. Today, PS-CRIMSON was awarded with the ITEA Award... (read more)

Trimble Adds New Innovation to Flagship GNSS Solution

Trimble has introduced the Trimble R12i GNSS receiver, the latest addition to its Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) portfolio. The Trimble R12i incorporates Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)-based tilt compensation using Trimble TIP technology, which enables points to be measured or staked out while the survey rod is tilted. This empowers land surveyors to focus on the job at hand and complete work faster and more accurately.  The IMU-based tilt compensation capability of the Trimble R12i builds on Trimble’s highly regarded ProPoint GNSS positioning engine which, according to the company, delivers more than 30% better performance in challenging environments compared to...
