Mapping Towns from QuickBird Imagery

Sub-metre Resolution and High Positioning Accuracy
QuickBird imagery offers the highest spatial resolution so far available from a commercial satellite. Resolutions as low as 60cm, combined with high positioning accuracy, make it well suited for mapping urban areas. The authors present examples. Key requirements for making an appropriate choice of satellite images are: geometrical resolution availability of multispectral bands specification of multispectral capabilities achievable positioning accuracy revisit rate (varies with latitude but is usually 2-3 days. VHR satellites with steered sensors can revisit the same scene more often but at different viewing angles) area covered by a single frame. Good Accuracy If it is to be... (read more)

Landsat Archive for Monitoring Coastline Changes

Based on some predictions, sea levels may rise by up to 1.5m by the year 2100. Such rises are likely to have severe effects on some coastal regions around the world, including many large cities. Regular monitoring of coastal areas contributes to understanding the current seasonal and long-term effects of changes. Professor John Trinder shares insights into how GNSS equipment, airborne Lidar and UAS-derived imagery have been used to demonstrate periodic changes in the coastline north of Sydney, Australia. For me, an advantage of working with civil engineers at the University of NSW, Australia, is being able to tap into the outcomes... (read more)

3D Roads Help Reduce Vehicle CO2 Emissions

The University of Stuttgart, Germany, has selected IntermapĀ“s 3D road geometry for the university's interdisciplinary research project VALIDATE - effective immediately. As part of the Germany federal government's high-tech strategy and IKT2020 research program, the University of Stuttgart initiated its VALIDATE research project in July 2008 with the goal of reducing vehicular CO2 emissions. The 3.7 million euro project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) through June 2011 - enabling the design of a powerful research platform that drives the analysis of benefits associated with future electronic control and assistance systems for motor vehicles. GPSDifferential Module

With the GPSDifferential module for the MobileMapper 6, sub-metre mapping is easy to achieve, even where real-time corrections are not available. The GPSDifferential module for the MobileMapper 6 is a software option that has been integrated into the new version of DigiTerra Explorer 6 to provide sub-meter performance for DigiTerra Explorer users working with a MobileMapper 6 device.   Behind the scenes and without interrupting normal workflow, the GPSDifferential module automatically logs the raw data that is required for reliable sub-meter post-processed differential corrections. The raw data file stored by this software extension can be post-processed using MobileMapper 6 Office,... (read more)

Thales GPSDifferential Module

GPSDifferential Module, a software extension for MobileMapper CE that adds post processing to mobile GIS/mapping software applications, has been released by Thales (CA, USA). With the GPSDifferential Module, sub-metre and up to sub-foot mapping is to achieve. GPSDifferential Module integrates into third-party mobile GIS software applications and automatically logs the raw data that is required for reliable sub-metre post-processed differential corrections. In certain conditions and with an external Thales GPS precision antenna, accuracy up to sub-foot can be consistently achieved. The Thales GPSDifferential Module includes MobileMapper Office software for post-processing. When GPSDifferential Module is integrated into a GIS application, raw... (read more)

Rugged Sub-metre GPS Solution

Juniper Systems is offering the Archer 2, a budget-friendly, easy-to-use sub-metre GPS solution using Esri ArcPad, Effigis’ EZSurv Post-Processing software and its ultra-rugged handheld computers. The company will be presenting this solution at Stand 2212 at the Esri User Conference in San Diego, USA, from 20–24 July 2015. This device involves collecting GIS data using a Juniper Systems rugged handheld running ArcPad data collection software, and then using Effigis’ EZSurv software to post-process the data, resulting in sub-metre GPS accuracy. Users can import and export data, including custom attributes, from their GIS. This data collection process bypasses the need for... (read more)
