EnsoMOSAIC UAV

The most new activity in remote sensing is at the moment found in the UAV and UAS sector (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle / System). There are hundreds of companies, institutions and individuals constructing UAVs for various uses and objectives. Both fixed wing and helicopter -based approaches are popular.       To serve manufacturers and operators of UAVs Stora Enso has released new versions EnsoMOSAIC UAV and EnsoMOSAIC UAV Pro of its leading EnsoMOSAIC automatic small and medium format image processing software. The new versions have full functionality and image rectification power, and are scaled for typical imaging project sizes of... (read more)

ARGOS Electric UAV

CATUAV, Spain, has developed an electric version of the ARGOS UAV platform designed specifically to meet the demands of CSIC's MESTRAL project. This new platform will enable images to be obtained simultaneously in the thermal, NIR and visible spectrums in Alfacs Bay in a single one-hour flight. The new ARGOS Electric has successfully completed the testing phase and will be ready to enter service in early September. (read more)

Rwanda Pioneers UAV Mapping

After Rwanda made waves in the news early last year for allegedly being the first country to approve drone-based deliveries, people started paying attention. The country, with its rolling hills and one of the fastest-growing economies in Central Africa, has already established regulations regarding drones and become a vanguard of sorts for the region. To support this development, in 2016 the University of Twente organised a course in Rwanda on the latest drone mapping techniques. There is a huge market in Africa at the moment, according to Francesco Nex, assistant professor at the ITC Faculty, University of Twente. The country is growing very fast, with... (read more)

Atmos UAV Launches Marlyn

Atmos UAV has launched Marlyn, the first hybrid unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or ‘drone’) in its class that is developed to operate at higher wind speeds while maintaining its helicopter flexibility and fixed-wing performance. Marlyn can be easily deployed from any surface, maps up to 10 times faster than a traditional multirotor and operates in a broad range of weather conditions. This makes Marlyn a valuable and time-saving asset for engineering professionals in industries such as construction, mining, agriculture and forestry. Conventional drones fall into two categories which each have their limitations: multirotors, which feature flexible take-off and landing but... (read more)

What is a UAV?

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles come in different forms (fixed-wing, copter, hybrid) and for many purposes and require different skills. Re-usable aircraft flown without onboard human crew have been in existence since 1916, the bulk of applications concerning reconnaissance and other military missions too shady, dirty or dodgy for human lives to be jeopardised. Ongoing miniaturisation of electronics is enabling smaller and smaller Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), and these are increasingly equipped with cameras or other sensors to support aerial geo-data collection. UAVs appear in manifestations as diverse as aeroplanes and helicopters of all sizes and shapes, motorised para-gliders, blimps, kites and balloons. What sort of UAV is suitable as a platform for digital cameras and other remote sensors? The... (read more)
