Atmos UAV Integrates Thermal, Multispectral and High-resolution Imagery

Atmos UAV, a drone manufacturer for mapping and surveying from Delft, the Netherlands, continues to expand its payload options. The most recent addition is the new MicaSense sensor, Altum, which integrates a radiometric thermal camera with five high-resolution narrow bands. This produces advanced thermal, multispectral and high-resolution imagery in one flight for advanced analytics purposes. Marlyn, the fixed-wing VTOL surveying platform developed by Atmos UAV, is now the only unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or 'drone') in its class capable of carrying this new high-end sensor. With this integration, Atmos team wanted to offer professionals a tool that maximizes their surveying... (read more)

Successful Launch of Second SpaceDataHighway Satellite

The EDRS-C satellite, the second node of the SpaceDataHighway network (also known as the European Data Relay System or 'EDRS'), has been successfully launched into geostationary orbit at 31° East by an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. After a test period it will double the transmission capacity of the system in order to serve two observation satellites simultaneously and provide redundant back-up for the SpaceDataHighway. This second satellite is joining EDRS-A which transmits on a daily basis the images of Earth acquired by the Copernicus programme’s four Sentinel observation satellites. Since it entered service in late 2016 it... (read more)

UAV Maps New Zealand Beach to Create Detailed 3D Model

A landslide on Clifton Beach, New Zealand, earlier this year injured two Korean tourists when they were washed out to sea. Following this event, the beach was closed while Hastings District Council undertook a risk assessment. The Surveying Company was contracted to provide data collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or 'drone') to assist the council in making public safety decisions regarding access to the Cape. To map the cliff faces they used a combination of RTK GPS and a PPK GPS unit mounted to their UAV. Initially the surveyors concentrated on assessing the main rockfall where the tourists... LidarUSA Introduces Long-endurance Multicopter Lidar Solution

LidarUSA has announced the integration of its UAV-scanning systems with the Harris Aerial H4/H6 Hybrid multicopters. As surveyors and mappers experience growth, they take on ever-larger projects, making longer flight times increasingly important. The Harris Hybrid can provide such flights, with Lidar and industrial-grade cameras allowing for far greater coverage in a single flight. “The beauty of the Harris Hybrid is that the pilot continues to enjoy the flexibility of a multicopter, availability of fuel and relatively compact packaging at an affordable price,” says Jeff Fagerman, CEO of LidarUSA. “While it is louder than an all-electric system, for particularly large,...
