NSW Launches Cloud-based Service to Manage Cadastre Data

A cloud-based cadastre-as-a-service platform in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has gone live to overhaul the state's approach to managing cadastral data. Representing a major upgrade to the process for maintaining and updating the NSW cadastre, the new API-based system is primarily aimed at reducing duplication of data and effort by becoming the automated backbone of the development-application submission process for councils. Replacing a system whereby hard-copy plans were routinely accepted and manually scanned by Spatial Services, the new submission process automatically extracts data and metadata from digital plans, and images are converted to LandXML. Under the new system, the... (read more)

Geospatial Data in Support of 3D Cadastre

Zooming in on Recent Technical Developments
The urbanization trend is leading to an increasing number of people living in cities, thus also placing new demands on cadastral registration. To be able to register the complex infrastructures and built-up areas properly, the cadastre will need to consider the third spatial dimension. The 3D cadastre is based on 3D parcels (spatial units) which are single volumes (or multiple volumes) of space. Although the technology offers numerous possibilities for implementation of the 3D cadastre, there are still some open issues, as this article explains. We live in a three-dimensional world. Over the past decades, there have been an increasing... (read more)

Enhancing Land Registration and Cadastre and Economic Growth in India

31st January to 1st February, 2006, New Delhi
In his foreword to the programme for this international conference, Prof. Paul van der Molen, chair of FIG’s Commission 7 on Cadastre and Land Management, highlighted how difficult it could be to relate investments in land-administration systems to effects on economic growth and alleviation of poverty. In relation to India, the McKinsey Global Institute in its report The Growth Imperative (2001) had calculated that removing barriers to the performance of the property market would propel forward economic growth by 1.3%. Aside from inflexible zoning, rent controls and protected tenancies, lack of an efficient land-registration system and cadastre also limited growth.... (read more)

Berlin Activates Viewing Function for Real Estate Cadastre LIKA

The Berlin Senate Administration for City Development (SenStadt) (Germany)has activated its new viewing function for real estate cadastre in the Internet. With it, registered users can choose and immediately acquire the extracts from the official real estate register with owner details that are relevant for them. This new service for geodata integrates the Automated Real Estate Map (ALK) as well as the Automated Real Estate Register (ALB) of the Federal State of Berlin, provides them on top of powerful Internet technology from AED-SICAD and automatically carries through the pricing and accounting functions by means of the e-commerce component of AED-SICAD... Multi-dimensional Cadastre: 3D and 4D

3D Data for Environmentally and Energetically Relevant Topics
In recent years, Germany's national mapping and cadastre information systems have become increasingly focused on demands for multidimensional applications, e.g. environmental protection, planning, energy supply and disaster management. The basic request of coverage and actuality was previously defined for the third dimension. In 2009, the Surveying Authorities of the States of the Federal Republic of Germany (AdV) arrived at the following decision: “The collection, data modelling and quality management of buildings for geotopographical surveying and for the cadastre are main tasks of the official German cadastre. This also includes the third dimension.” The fourth dimension (time) is now an integral component of the... (read more)

ISPRS UN-GGIM National Mapping and Cadastre Agency Forum

UN-GGIM National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies Forum National mapping and cadastre agencies provide geospatial data of various levels of detail, types, and scales, which form the basis of today's geospatial data infrastructure – an indispensable  national asset for sustainable development of the country and many other applications. The Forum sessions (14-15 July) will be comprised of invited and presented papers. One session will be a shared session of the National Mapping and Cadastre Agencies and Space Agencies. It will be dedicated to two important questions: How do National Mapping and Cadastre Agencies use satellite remote sensing data?; What they would... (read more)

Finland Becomes Chair of Permanent Committee on Cadastre in the EU

On 1 July, the chair for the Permanent Committee on Cadastre (PCC) in the European Union (EU) was transferred to Finland for the rest of the year. The committee brings together the national cadastral institutions in the EU, and influences the EU organs by emphasizing the significance of cadastral data. The EU’s INSPIRE directive pursues the sharing of spatial data materials. The National Land Survey of Finland coordinates the implementation of the INSPIRE directive in Finland. “I credit the PCC for influencing the EU Commission in connection with defining the spatial data material for the INSPIRE directive”, said Arvo Kokkonen, the director-general of the National Land Survey Finland.... How a Well-Functioning Cadastre Can Help Greece to Solve the Crisis

A year ago GIM International took the opportunity to interview the general director of the Greek Cadastre, Akis Markatos. Earlier in 2014, work had started on the completion of the cadastral registration in Greece. More than 60 percent of the territory still had to be surveyed, and the project was destined to be completed by 2020. The IT infrastructure had been set up, new laws passed, 28 survey projects tendered, and a new board and management were in place at the National Cadastre and Mapping Agency. Now, one year later, not much seems to have changed and there are still... (read more)

Review of the Annual Meeting of FIG Commission 7 on Cadastre and Land Management

FIG Commission 7 held its annual meeting in September 2011 in Innsbruck, Austria. This event culminated with the International Symposium Cadastre 2.0. Issues relating to land administration and cadastral perspectives are of high interest, namely in regard to citizens' involvement, crowdsourcing and social media, and to completion of cadastre and land registration in the developing world. This concerns about 75% of the 6 billion or so spatial units in use by humans. Key focal points for the Commission are management of government lands, pro-poor land tools (with UN-HABITAT), spatially enabled societies, climate change, the cadastral template, the Land Administration... Czech Cadastre Makes Terabytes of Data Rapidly Available to the Public

The Czech Republic’s national mapping agency, the Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre (COSMC), has implemented a web-based solution from Intergraph for the distribution and publishing of national geospatial data. The solution includes high-performance image compression and delivery for handling big data on a large scale. COSMC’s original system, based on Intergraph’s GeoMedia, was recently upgraded to an integrated web-based portal, leveraging multiple Intergraph technologies. COSMC also integrated image exploitation and analysis, featuring ERDAS IMAGINE, into existing workflows The Czechs needed the right solution to allow us to improve and streamline the management and distribution of key geospatial data,...
