‘Knowledge and Action for the Earth’ is the theme of Intergeo 2006, the annual geodesy and geo-information conference and trade-fair organised in association with the German Association of Surveying (DVW) and taking place from 10th to 12th October. Roaming as it does annually from one major city in Germany to another, Intergeo this year settles in Munich, world-renowned Bavarian capital of science, technology, arts and culture and, last but not least, the October Beer Festivals. Despite the plethora of high-resolution Earth observation satellites and the exponentially increasing impact of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or 'drones') on the aerial mapping sector, most large and medium-scale ‘topographic’ or GIS map data is still derived from manned aircraft, whether fixed-wing or rotary. Bathymetric data in the shallow water zone is of increasing importance to support various applications such as safety of navigation, reconnaissance surveys, coastal zone management or hydrodynamic modelling. A gap was identified between data demand, costs and the ability to map with ship and airborne sensors. Mapping an Oil Pipeline

Adverse weather and terrain conditions meant the Cano-Limon oil pipeline in Colombia had never been accurately mapped until orthorectified images and digital elevation models covering an area of 94,000km2 were created using airborne dual-band interferometric IFSAR simultaneously acquired X and P-band data. The authors report on main aspects of the project. The Cano-Limon oil pipeline extends nearly 780km from the Cano-Limon oilfield in Colombia’s Arauca region along the north-western border with Venezuela to a port in Covenas.
