3D Map Data for Aviation Terrain Obstacle Database

Intermap Technologies' high-resolution NEXTMap digital elevation data is being used to develop an advanced terrain and obstacle solution in advance of the Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)'s eTOD (Electronic Terrain Obstacle Data) initiative. The process for collecting the NEXTMap dataset is currently undergoing certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). NEXTMap data will ultimately enable an eTOD solution, which will help address cross-border harmonisation issues in an effort to satisfy the need for uniformity and consistency in the provision of aeronautical information. Developed in concert with several European-based air navigation service providers, the solution can potentially reduce the risk of... (read more)

High-Resolution Field-based Survey

MÉTA: Multi-Attributed Vegetation Database of Hungary
Traditional vegetation mapping faces new challenges: much larger survey areas, new habitat categories for uncharacteristic or degraded vegetation, increased number of ecological attributes and new methodological standards. The Hungarian MÉTA field-based vegetation-mapping project has risen to the challenge with a triple-level spatial database. Ecosystems and biological populations experience many problems: overexploitation, loss of biodiversity and climate change. To tackle these, traditional vegetation science is regaining importance. For example, in Europe field-based high-resolution vegetation mapping over large areas has been conducted in Spain and the Czech Republic, motivated by the European Natura 2000 programme. The European Union has also established the... (read more)

Integrating GIS and MIS

Database-level Integration for Watershed Development
Management information systems (MIS) are used in a multitude of applications. Maps improve decision-making but GIS has not yet become an integrated part of MIS. Integration can take place at various levels, but most important are those of user interface and database. The former helps the layman understand information. Database-level integration enables up-to-date data transfer between MIS and GIS. Here, the authors present an example of the latter in an application for watershed development in India. It is common practice to develop different software applications separately for the same user-group. This complicates satisfaction of user requirements and increases development costs.... (read more)
