AfricaGEO to Highlight Geomatics Practice in Africa

The AfricaGEO conference in July 2014 promises a range of interesting papers with a focus on geomatics practice in Africa. Parallel sessions are organised to offer interesting sessions across a broad spectrum of areas, including: 1) cadastres and land tenure, 2) technology, engineering, precise surveying and scanning, 3) GIS, SDI and data management, 4) remote sensing and photogrammetry, 5) geodesy, and 6) education and professional aspects. The cadastral and land tenure sessions have a good mix of theory and practice and will be of interest to policymakers, academics and practising surveyors. Customary land management and the concerns of urbanisation and... (read more)

United Nations General Assembly Adopts First Geospatial Resolution

The science that supports the precise pinpointing of people and places should be shared more widely, according to the United Nations General Assembly. The statement came as it adopted its first resolution recognising the importance of a globally coordinated approach to geodesy – the discipline focused on accurately measuring the shape, rotation and gravitational field of planet Earth. The General Assembly resolution, A Global Geodetic Reference Frame for Sustainable Development, outlines the value of ground-based observations and remote satellite sensing when tracking changes in populations, ice caps, oceans and the atmosphere over time. Such geospatial measurements can support sustainable development policymaking,... (read more)

Russian Technology Application Geography Expanding

A Russian space data ground receiving station has been installed in Armenia. Small-size universal UniScan complexes, developed and manufactured by ScanEx Research & Development Center, have been used in 40 regional, departmental and national centers of Earth Remote Sensing. For 19 years of its operation ScanEx have supplied ground stations to 11 CIS countries and abroad. In October 2008, Armenia was added to this impressive list.     Program for establishment of the Space Monitoring Center in Armenia became a leading Russian-Armenian project in sphere of space technology application. A Space Monitoring Center is to help resolving tasks in geodesy,... (read more)

Uzbekistan Upgrades ILS Land Register Software (LRS)

International Land Systems (ILS), Inc. in conjunction with DHV of the Netherlands, has provided 12 server and 36 client licenses of the ILS Land Register Software (LRS) as part of the European Commission's Land Registration Project in Uzbekistan. In addition to the new licenses, ILS upgraded previously supplied licenses and trained staff of the central and regional registration offices in the National Centre of Geodesy and Cartography, part of the State Committee for Land Resources, Geodesy, Cartography and State Cadastre (Goscomzemgeodescadastre). For many, the training acted as a refresher course and a chance to learn about recent enhancements to the... (read more)
