Infrastructure Interdependence

Characteristic of today's urbanised world is its increasingly intertwined and complex network of roads, railways, underground cables and other above and below ground infrastructure. Infrastructure interdependency studies are concerned with the interconnectedness between crucial infrastructures such as utilities and transport. Many of these systems play a crucial role in emergency response. Movement to and from base, such as a fire station, to the emergency site, is just one example of the many vital areas of interdependence between various systems.   Integrated Model Proper emergency management requires not only acquisition of (geo-)data, its maintenance and updating, usually carried out by various... Sustaining Infrastructure

Sustainability was the key word at this year’s Bentley Conference, expressed not only by its theme, ‘Best Practices for Sustaining Infrastructure’, but also through other initiatives, including the attempt to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 15% before the end of 2009. The conference took place at the Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland, US, from 28th to 30th May 2008.<P> To travel through Africa is to learn the meaning of sustaining infrastructure; there, neglected roads make moving from place to place a long and tantalising experience. Bentley chose the theme of sustainability to illustrate how infrastructure is the engine for... (read more)

Web-based Infrastructure Management

The geoportal software g.on aimPort will be represented at CeBIT 2011 in Hanover, to be held from 1st to 5th March 2011. Potential clients are mostly operators of industrial plants, office and business sites or airports and harbours. G.on aimPort allows them a detailed documentation of their infrastructure and its administration via the Internet. Using Oracle technology guarantees the seamless integration of the software into the IT environment of any organisation. G.on aimPort does not require costly - and time-consuming - trainings. This is an important fact for site operators where neither management nor other persons working with the system... (read more)

Bahrain Spatial Data Infrastructure

The National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) for the Kingdom of Bahrain was officially implemented in February 2005 by the GIS Directorate of the Central Informatics Organisation (CIO), Kingdom of Bahrain. This was in compliance with a Government decree, in accordance with which the Bahrain Spatial Data Infrastructure (BSDI) Portal serves both public and private sectors, academic institutions, and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Powerful Tool The BSDI Portal operates on a GIS database of data layers containing important information including street centre-lines, addresses, electricity and water, transmission and distribution, telecommunica-tions, gas and oil pipelines, sewerage and drainage.  More than... Victorian Rail Infrastructure Survey

Geomatic Technologies (GT) (Australia), with the Department of Infrastructure (DOI), has completed the Victorian Rail Infrastructure Survey and Pass Assets project. The project involved producing a register of assets associated with Victoria’s Rail Infrastructure, estimated to be worth $6 billion. The register was identified by the State Government as being a requirement following the rail privatisation process in the late 90’s. Geomatic Technologies was commissioned by the DOI, to conduct a state-wide survey of all rail infrastructure through Metropolitan Melbourne and Rural Victoria. GT utilised many survey techniques including photogrammetric drivers-view and digital geo-referenced track imagery, taken from equipment mounted... (read more)

New Zealand Modernises Infrastructure Network

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) have jointly purchased 40 Trimble NetR9 GNSS reference station receivers as part of a project to upgrade the LINZ PositioNZ GPS network to multi-constellation GNSS and real-time data distribution capability. LINZ is the government department responsible for the geodetic infrastructure and land title system in the country. The LINZ network of reference stations provides accurate control points for monitoring and developing the geospatial infrastructure of the country, conducting geoscience research as part of the GeoNet project, and performing commercial survey work throughout New Zealand. Users can... (read more)
