2D and 3D Enrichment of Panoramas

Visualisation of Topographical Features Improves Functionality
The use of panoramic images has become widespread in many governmental agencies and companies, especially in the last couple of years. It is possible to integrate 2D spatial features (e.g. building outlines, parcels, utilities etc.) with panoramic images to enable the proper visualisation of topographical features in a 3D environment. Verbree et al. (2004) have shown the advantages of augmenting underground conduit pipes and cables into panoramic images, thus allowing better visualisation of otherwise invisible features. Solid as a Rock?
People often describe something hard and immovable as ‘solid as a rock’. But rock does not always live up to its reputation. Depending on its characteristics and local conditions, sections of rock may slip, slide, crumble or deform, with potentially serious consequences. Geologists study the geomechanical properties of rock masses to understand how they may fail. This is traditionally done by measuring the characteristics of the rock mass discontinuity sets by climbing the rock face or by using photogrammetry, but terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has caught the attention of geologists as being a safer and more effective method. ASPRS Annual Conference
This year’s annual conference of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) took place from 7th to 11th March, with the theme ‘Geospatial Goes Global: From Your Neighbourhood to the Whole Planet’. Aimed at a wide variety of professionals, the conference included more than four hundred technical and special session presentations and at least seventy poster sessions.
