Brandenburg Metadata Service

A few days ago a Service Portal for Metadata was launched by the Spatial Data Infrastructure Berlin/ Brandenburg (GDI-BE/BB). The Landesvermessung und Geobasisinformation Brandenburg (LGB) and geoinformation service provider DELPHI IMM GmbH of Potsdam have announced official ending of the test phase of the Service Portal, which represents a reliable and freely available 24-hour solution for Brandenburg county administration and regional service providers for capturing, collecting, validating and publishing meta-information from their geo-data, geo-services and geo-applications. Core element of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is the seizure of the supply of metadata of geo data and geo services that are... (read more)

Positive Feedback Service Portal for Metadata

A few days ago the ‘Service Portal for Metadata' has celebrated its 3rd month anniversary. On this occasion DELPHI IMM GmbH has welcomed numerous geodata suppliers and users of the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) Berlin/Brandenburg, Germany, as well as business partners and interested parties to the very heart of Potsdam. Heinrich Tilly, President of the Landesvermessung und Geobasisinformation Brandenburg (LGB) held the opening keynote speech by sending a clear message to the attendees of the venue: „Make use of your metadata to create trust and transparency for the availability and interoperability of your geoinformation!". Besides, Tilly invited the key geoinformation... (read more)

Comments Sought on Earth Observation Metadata Profile

The membership of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) seeks public comment on the candidate Earth Observation Metadata Profile of the OGC Observations and Measurements (O&M) Standard. It is intended to provide a standard schema for encoding Earth observation (EO) product metadata to support the description and cataloguing of products acquired by sensors aboard EO satellites. EO products are differentiated by parameters such as the date of acquisition and the image footprint as well as characteristics pertaining to the type of sensor, the type of platform, the applied processing chain, and more. This candidate standard identifies the metadata elements that enable... (read more)

Blue Marble Desktop v2.3 with New Metadata Editor Tool

Blue Marble Geographics (USA) offers support for metadata within the Blue Marble Desktop v2.3. The Metadata Editor tool allows users to create or update FGDC-compliant metadata for files that are processed through the Blue Marble Desktop. This new feature will allow for the seamless integration of metadata into existing workflows which will help users to share geographic data across their complete enterprise while retaining data integrity throughout the entire lifecycle.     Metadata can now be automatically created for any file that the Blue Marble Desktop writes out. A base template, included within the application, can be filled out with... (read more)

IDENA: Spatial Data Infrastructure of Navarre

Architecture, Metadata and Interoperability
Several years ago Navarre (Spain) implemented a Land Information System (SITNA) within its corporate Information System. Notwithstanding the success of this initiative there remains a lack of metadata, an issue highlighted over the past two years by INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial InfoRmation in Europe). This is the context for IDENA (Spatial Data Infrastructure of Navarre), developed by Trabajos Catastrales S.A., to give SITNA a catalogue of meta-information, distribution of metadata and interoperability with other SDIs. The 2004 Commission of the European Community publication “Proposal for a Directive of the European parliament and of the council establishing an infrastructure for spatial... (read more)

Creating a Satellite-data Integration System

The Importance of International Standards
CEOP (Coordinated Enhanced Observation Period) is currently working on an integrated global water and energy-cycle observation system for scientific and civilian use. One challenge is the creation of a satellite-data integration system able to combine a multitude of data stemming from a diversity of distributed systems. Data retrieval and combination requires high-performance distributed data-management and archiving systems. But the key is specification of metadata, for which international standards are indispensable. The prerequisites for developing a Satellite-Data Integration System (SDIS) are, next to specification of metadata, data discovery and data integration, geocoding service and data quality control, and standardisation of image-service... Mapping the World of Standards

The ICA Spatial Data Standards Commission, active since 1991, is one of ICA’s most productive commissions. It has addressed a number of specific issues since its formation, including transfer formats, national standards and metadata. Its most recent publication is the book World Spatial Metadata Standards (Elsevier 2005, ed. H. Moellering, ISBN: 0-08-043949-7). In collating this book the Commission has developed an exhaustive set of scientific and technical characteristics by which every spatial metadata standard in the world can be assessed and understood. It has also addressed profiles, operational subsets of a main metadata standard usually applied to a specific thematic... (read more)

Web Catalogue Service for Spatial Data Infrastructures

Simplified workflow for metadata management, full GDI-DE compliance, improved performance and a new user interface are all features of the new 3.2 version of sdi.suite terraCatalog by con terra from Germany. The primary focus was the further development and simplification of supported workflows to capture, manage and search using metadata. This enables the login of registered users, who now get access to the system via domain cookies without having to login once more. A true single sign-on is now possible in conjunction with other software applications or a user’s Windows login. In addition, terraCatalog delivers full the GDI-DE compliance, having... (read more)

OS Reaches INSPIRE Milestone

Metadata about Ordnance Survey’s products have been made available through, alongside INSPIRE-compliant view services through the OS OnDemand web map service.     The INSPIRE Directive establishes a framework for easier sharing of geographic information among European public bodies and improved accessibility to the public. One of the first steps for organisations producing data which falls under INSPIRE was the creation of metadata. Ordnance Survey’s metadata is now available for other public bodies and the public to access on their website and on   Customers of the OS OnDemand web map service will also be able to view INSPIRE-related products as a...
