Bluesky to Lidar Capture Wales from the Air

Aerial mapping company Bluesky International has been awarded a contract by Natural Resources Wales, on behalf of Welsh Government, to capture a high-resolution laser mapped aerial survey of the whole of Wales. Working alongside Natural Resources Wales and Welsh Government, Bluesky will capture the data at a resolution of 2 points per metre before processing and delivering Lidar data for more than 20,000 square kilometres of rural and urban landscapes. The Bluesky Lidar data will be employed in a range of policy areas including flood modelling, forestry management, coastline monitoring, urban planning and archaeological conservation. In addition, to use internally... (read more)

How to Choose Between the Many Geodata Acquisition Systems?

How can we choose between the many geodata acquisition systems when our equipment needs replacing or we’re expanding due to business success? This seemingly simple question is surprisingly hard to answer, so I will outline some considerations. Improving workflows focused on a few, well-defined applications entails other concerns than when multiple business fields are covered. If your focus is on sparse point measurements in urban areas, it may be sufficient to extend your total station fleet with high-accuracy GNSS receivers. If you are growing your business through terrestrial laser scanning as a novelty, you should consider questions such as: How... (read more)

Rapid Survey Technology for Puerto Rico Earthquake Response

Geoxphere and WaldoAir Assist from the Air and on the Ground
A series of strong earthquakes recently hit populated areas in the south of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, causing major damage to properties and infrastructure. Geoxphere and WaldoAir were mobilized to assist in the disaster response effort. Tasked with capturing detailed photography from both the air and the ground, which was a first in this context, the team utilized their XCAM and XCAM360 rapid survey technology, with XMAP as the cloud-based data delivery tool. When a natural disaster such as a hurricane, earthquake or flood occurs, it is important to establish the extent of the damage, the risk to... (read more)

How Will the Surveyor’s Role Look in 10 Years’ Time?

Over the next ten years, the surveyor’s workflow will become quicker, safer and easier because of new technologies like scanning, mobile mapping and UAS photogrammetry. Virtual layout, aided by the increasing use of augmented reality technologies, will require fewer physical stakes in the ground. Due to the transformation of the physical world into a digital one, digital twins will take centre stage, with surveyors called upon to convey meaningful information from the model back to the physical world. Demand will increase for surveyors’ expertise in time-based analysis of changing site conditions, such as monitoring installations for volume-changing and deformation analysis.... (read more)
