InSAR Satellite Technology Data Fills Niche for Forest Inventory

Remote sensing is a great way to learn more about our forests and manage them accordingly. Scion, a New Zealand government-owned research institute, is exploring new methods to capture information, such as SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar). A recent study found that while Lidar is still much more precise for predicting forest attributes, InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) has several other benefits to consider. Remote sensing involves recording data about an object, without making contact with the object. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) satellite technology is one method that has been used to perform forest inventory overseas, but a study that was conducted... (read more)

Using PPP Corrections in Precise Real-time Applications

Minding the Gaps
Satellite-delivered GNSS correction services can be used in many real-time applications where real-time kinematic (RTK) and virtual reference stations (VRS) are not available. In areas without regular communication systems, satellite-broadcast PPP corrections can deliver centimetre-level positioning worldwide in real time. While geospatial professionals who use RTK and VRS enjoy reliable, cost-effective performance in a broad array of tasks, there are many instances where conditions conspire to make working in real time difficult or even impossible. For example, hilly terrain may block radio signals from an RTK base station, while inconsistent cellular coverage can disrupt or cut off communications with the... (read more)

Pointfuse Showcases New Scan-to-BIM Workflow at Digital Construction Week

At this year's Digital Construction Week, Pointfuse demonstrated a new scan-to-BIM workflow, aimed at bringing reality capture to building information modelling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) practitioners. Pointfuse software converts the millions of individual measurements captured by laser scanning and photogrammetry into usable 3D mesh models. The ability to classify objects within Pointfuse, both automatically and manually, has had a huge impact on how as-built data is used within the construction workflow.   New features also on show at Digital Construction Week, which took place from 16-17 October at Excel, London, included streamlined classification to ensure maximum efficiency and... Bluesky Launches MetroVista City Mapping Service

Aerial mapping company Bluesky has recently introduced its MetroVista city mapping service for Europe, based on data from the Leica CityMapper. At this year's Intergeo in Stuttgart, Bluesky showed the MetroVista imagery created from the hybrid airborne sensor that can simultaneously capture vertical and oblique aerial photography as well as Lidar. Bluesky’s MetroVista range includes impressive high-resolution imagery together with high-accuracy, wide-scale 3D models. The first in Europe, and still only one of a handful in operation around the globe, Bluesky’s CityMapper has already been used to capture MetroVista data for cities across the UK, including London, Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol.... The Role of Surveyors in the Evolution of BIM

Building information modelling (BIM) is becoming more commonplace within construction sectors globally, combining technology with improved collaboration to better manage projects and give them the best chance of complying with time and budget constraints. However, the BIM life cycle and efforts to espouse it are almost futile if surveying is taken out of the equation or, more realistically, brought in too late. It can be good to have a structure that is successfully using BIM to be delivered on time and within budget, but if it or any of its components are in the wrong position, the consequences can be...
