3D Modelling of Fez

A Model from Aerial/Terrestrial Imagery and Topographic Maps
The ancient imperial city of Fez, Morocco, is an important tourist attraction and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The layout of the city is complex, which presents challenges in terms of 3D modelling. Here, the authors discuss a pilot aimed at creating a 3D model of Fez using topographic maps and aerial and terrestrial imagery. Overlapping 1:4,000 aerial images were used to create a digital surface model (DSM) and orthoimages. Orthoimages and topographic maps were used to manually delineate the footprints of buildings, roads, rivers and suchlike. Terrestrial imagery of single buildings from multiple... (read more)

Detailed 3D Facade Modelling

A new solution from GTA (Germany) and Procedural offers more 3D detail in modelling of large databases of real-world building data. Special focus is set to add depth to the facade, as well as roof details. CityEngine imports 3D buildings generated automatically using GTA’s software solution Tridicon 3D, transfers detailed tridiconTM3D façade description to CityEngine building parameters and generates rich and visually pleasing procedural 3D buildings.     In addition to its highly efficient modelling tools, there is GTA’s 3D database with more than 175 European cities and 5.400 km² real-world building data available. Highlights are the 3D city model... (read more)

Dedicated Building Information Modelling Academy

Crossrail and Bentley Systems, UK, have launched a dedicated Information Academy to provide hands-on technology and software training to the Crossrail supply chain for designing and building the new railway including 3D Mapping and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The Information Academy will capture, develop and share BIM best practices with the Crossrail supply chain. The increased use of BIM by the industry is a key element of the Government Construction Strategy. Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail’s chief executive, said that Crossrail is pioneering the use of Building Information Modelling in Europe on a scale that has not been undertaken before. This has... Mapping and 3D Modelling in Medina

The city of Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is realising base maps and 3D modelling. In order to provide the necessary services, Blom CGR, the Italian subsidiary of Blom ASA, has partnered with Unicom from Saudi Arabia to secure this contract with the Development Commission of Medina (DCOM).     Blom's capture technologies will produce accurate and high-resolution data; the deliverables consist of Lidar, aerial photo and BlomOBLIQUE. Blom's data will form a unique geospatial base in DCOMs sophisticated database sharing service, providing an encompassing solution.   Blom's share of the contract is NOK8 million. The contract will... (read more)

Pipe Modelling from Point Cloud Data

Elysium, an emerging Japan-based provider in the point cloud data industry, has released a new version of InfiPoints. Version 2.0 highlights enhancements such as pipe modelling and video generation from point cloud data consisting of billions of points. The company has recently been expanding its portfolio from CAD data translation and processing to point cloud rendering technologies. Pipe modelling from point cloud data is one of the key features and enhancements of InfiPoints that provides a competitive advantage for both time and accuracy. Without this capability, it is very time consuming to model piping elements from point cloud data as... (read more)

3D Modelling Application for BIM Projects

OS Model Builder is a recently launched visualisation tool that can support projects, including Level 2 BIM activities, and was developed to save the construction industry and its clients’ time and money when planning future projects. OS Model Builder is the result of an exciting new collaboration between Cadline and Ordnance Survey (OS) to provide Autodesk Infraworks 360 customers with a single source of Great Britain’s most accurate and up-to-date collection of geographic data, all presented in a pre-configured CAD-ready file that can be used to create 2 and 3D building or infrastructure models in minutes rather than days or weeks. The application... (read more)

Integrating Geospatial Services with Modelling and Simulation

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC, USA) and the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) Modelling and Simulation (M&S) Working Group will provide a demonstration of new standards developments that provide the capability to rapidly discover, transform and stream geospatial data from internet sources into modelling and simulation applications for all I/ITSEC attendees, on 4 December 2013 in Orlando, USA. The USGIF M&S Working Group Demo simulations will feature two hypothetical scenarios -- a military rescue operation against terrorists in Yemen and civilian oil spill response activity in Hawaii. Attendees will see how implementations of open standards enable: ·    Direct flow... (read more)

British Information Modelling Event Witnesses New Innovations

The second British Information Modelling (BIM) event proved a success with 100 delegates heading to the Arup’s central London headquarters during the last week of October. A fitting opening event for Digital Construction Week – which followed later in the week – British Information Modelling saw a lively discussion between the audience and a panel comprising of Cobus Bothma and Martin Coyne of KPF, Shaun Farrell of Turner & Townsend and Andrew Norrie of Graphisoft.  The BIM-focused event was organised by 3D Repo, the company behind multi-award winning technology that allows complex BIM datasets from multiple sources to be stored... Time-space Modelling with Terrestrial Lidar

Monitoring Ice Cliff Evolution of the Miage Glacier, Italy, with ILRIS-3D
The Miage Glacier at Mont Blanc Massif, with an area totalling 11km2, is the third largest glacier in Italy. Time-space modelling of the lakebed and glacier walls carried out with terrestrial Lidar revealed that the ice cliff had retreated more than 45m between July 2003 and September 2004. The Miage Lake area, which has been a tourist attraction and object of study for decades, has been affected by at least seventeen drainage events over the past hundred years, the most recent just last year. Observations during this last event suggest that an increased discharge of water from the lake, resulting... (read more)
