3D Modelling of Castles

Integrating Techniques for Detail and Photo-realism
Three-dimensional documentation of heritage buildings is important for conservation, restoration and education. When it comes to complex architectural structures such as castles, no single modelling technique is capable of yielding cost-effective, highly detailed and accurate photo-realism. The authors demonstrate how integration of multiple techniques brings resolution.<P> Castles are unique and fascinating structures of complex architecture the style of which has evolved over centuries. Three-dimensional modelling aims at capturing all geometrical detail, both exterior and interior, and representing these features with high-resolution triangular meshes for accurate documentation and photo-realistic visualisation. Modelling complex and large-scale architecture requires the integration of multiple techniques,... (read more)

Data Modelling for Water Management

UML for Better Communication among Stakeholders
In 2004 the government agency responsible for water management in The Netherlands began a project to create an integrated geo-database for holding all geo-information on water-related objects. The set-up of the geo-database had to be sufficiently flexible for use at different management levels and geo-data had to be accessible using Web services. UML has played an important role in the project: it helps discussions, forcing designers and end-users to be specific. Because of its geographic location in a low-lying delta, water management is of prime import-ance for The Netherlands. Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, is... (read more)

Dedicated Building Information Modelling Academy

Crossrail and Bentley Systems, UK, have launched a dedicated Information Academy to provide hands-on technology and software training to the Crossrail supply chain for designing and building the new railway including 3D Mapping and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The Information Academy will capture, develop and share BIM best practices with the Crossrail supply chain. The increased use of BIM by the industry is a key element of the Government Construction Strategy. Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail’s chief executive, said that Crossrail is pioneering the use of Building Information Modelling in Europe on a scale that has not been undertaken before. This has... Mapping and 3D Modelling in Medina

The city of Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is realising base maps and 3D modelling. In order to provide the necessary services, Blom CGR, the Italian subsidiary of Blom ASA, has partnered with Unicom from Saudi Arabia to secure this contract with the Development Commission of Medina (DCOM).     Blom's capture technologies will produce accurate and high-resolution data; the deliverables consist of Lidar, aerial photo and BlomOBLIQUE. Blom's data will form a unique geospatial base in DCOMs sophisticated database sharing service, providing an encompassing solution.   Blom's share of the contract is NOK8 million. The contract will... (read more)

Autonomous 3D Modelling of Indoor Spaces

A Comparison of Mobile Indoor Scanning Methods
Mobile scanning can be an equally accurate yet more cost-effective solution than traditional terrestrial laser scanning done with tripods. To succeed, however, mobile scanners not only require a suitable combination of sensors, but also reliable and continuous knowledge about where the scanners are located and the direction in which they are pointing during scanning. There are multiple ways to achieve this, which has led to the development of various scientific and commercial solutions. This article compares several mobile scanning solutions for 3D modelling of indoor spaces and highlights their strengths and weaknesses. In modern society, people tend to spend more... (read more)

End-to-end 3D Modelling Solution

ClearEdge3D, USA, has officially launched EdgeWise Plant 4.0, with numerous major new features and enhancements that have created one of the fastest end-to-end pipe modelling solutions on the market. The software automates the 3D modelling of complex process plant facilities, cutting up to 85% of labour from the modelling workflow. Robert Greenhalgh, Ramboll Oil & Gas, used the software on a recent North Sea offshore project. They reduced their 3D modelling time substantially with EdgeWise Plant 4.0. Building standard pipe fittings on top of the powerful automated tools makes 4.0 a complete pipe modelling package, he said. The new features... (read more)

Maptek Demonstrates Resource Modelling Technology at PDAC

With the investment stream opening up, visitors to this year’s PDAC in Toronto, Canada, will be keen to explore resource estimation and project evaluation tools that can add value to mining projects. Maptek adds value to the entire mine cycle, from exploration through modelling, mine design, optimisation, production and rehabilitation. Maptek capabilities for handling large datasets are developed to make targeting easier. Evaluating multiple prospects on the desktop helps ensure money is not wasted pursuing an uneconomic project. The data remain available and processes are fully auditable and can be revisited when conditions change. Maptek’s latest Eureka 3 allows multi-source,... (read more)

Sharing and Reusing Geospatial and Modelling Data

Last month, Envitia, UK, announced the launch of Envitia Discovery 2.7 for modelling and simulation. Envitia Discovery allows organisations to seamlessly share and reuse geospatial and modelling data. Users are able to rapidly discover, transform and stream geospatial data into modelling and simulation applications using open standards. Powerful production workflows coupled with an intuitive web portal ensure that end users are never more than a few clicks from finding their required datasets. Envitia Discovery reduces the time spent hunting for data and instead allows more time for data visualisation and exploitation in systems. Envitia Discovery 2.7 bridges the gap between live... Free Modelling and Simulation Terrain Databases

The U.S. Army Geospatial Center (AGC) is distributing Modelling and Simulation (M&S) terrain databases along with operational geospatial products on its Common Map Background (CMB) website with the goal of providing a single repository for all geospatial products. There are 161 free synthetic terrain databases that support Live, Virtual, & Constructive (L/V/C) simulations used in training, testing and experimentation hosted on CMB. These M&S terrain databases are available in multiple formats suitable for use in Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF), One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF), Virtual Battle Space 2 (VBS2) and other Department of Defense simulations. Available terrain databases include selected Army... (read more)
