A Model from Aerial/Terrestrial Imagery and Topographic Maps
The ancient imperial city of Fez, Morocco, is an important tourist attraction and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The layout of the city is complex, which presents challenges in terms of 3D modelling. Here, the authors discuss a pilot aimed at creating a 3D model of Fez using topographic maps and aerial and terrestrial imagery. Overlapping 1:4,000 aerial images were used to create a digital surface model (DSM) and orthoimages. Modelling the Great Wall of China

Mapping by Airborne and Terrestrial Lidar
The Great Wall of China is one of the largest manmade wonders of the world, comprising many different and irregular structures. We employed airborne Lidar to produce highly accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) to identify areas requiring repair. A terrestrial laser scanner mounted on a tripod was used to improve the terrain model, especially for surfaces covered with dense vegetation. The combined use of airborne and terrestrial laser scanner produced DEMs with accuracies better than 10cm. Air Pollution Modelling with 3D Visualisation

UK-based environmental engineering company Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC) has been using the TatukGIS Developer Kernel (DK) ActiveX edition since 2007 to develop the GIS mapping module for its ADMS air pollution modelling software. The mapping module developed from the TatukGIS DK, called ADMS Mapper, is used to visualise and edit input data for the ADMS modelling software. The Mapper can render pollutant concentrations output from the ADMS model. The U.S. Army Geospatial Center (AGC) is distributing Modelling and Simulation (M&S) terrain databases along with operational geospatial products on its Common Map Background (CMB) website with the goal of providing a single repository for all geospatial products. There are 161 free synthetic terrain databases that support Live, Virtual, & Constructive (L/V/C) simulations used in training, testing and experimentation hosted on CMB.
