Air Pollution Modelling with 3D Visualisation

UK-based environmental engineering company Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC) has been using the TatukGIS Developer Kernel (DK) ActiveX edition since 2007 to develop the GIS mapping module for its ADMS air pollution modelling software. The mapping module developed from the TatukGIS DK, called ADMS Mapper, is used to visualise and edit input data for the ADMS modelling software. The Mapper can render pollutant concentrations output from the ADMS model. Before ADMS Mapper became available, users of ADMS had to buy third-party GIS software such as ESRI ArcGIS or MapInfo to visualise their modelling scenarios. ADMS is used by hundreds of people... 3D Modelling from RGB Images

FOVEX Measure 3D is a combination of a super-fast high-resolution 360° panorama camera and innovative software that allows accurate measurement and CAD modelling directly within the images. FOVEX Measure 3D allows significant savings in field and office work, thereby increasing productivity. The technique is to be presented at Intergeo, taking place from 9 to 11 October 2012 in Hanover, Germany. After measuring an object in two images, its shape can be modelled by connecting points directly in the software. Therefore, the CAD model can be completed within the FOVEX software directly and the model as a whole can be exported... (read more)

Free Modelling and Simulation Terrain Databases

The U.S. Army Geospatial Center (AGC) is distributing Modelling and Simulation (M&S) terrain databases along with operational geospatial products on its Common Map Background (CMB) website with the goal of providing a single repository for all geospatial products. There are 161 free synthetic terrain databases that support Live, Virtual, & Constructive (L/V/C) simulations used in training, testing and experimentation hosted on CMB. These M&S terrain databases are available in multiple formats suitable for use in Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF), One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF), Virtual Battle Space 2 (VBS2) and other Department of Defense simulations. Available terrain databases include selected Army... (read more)

Capturing, Modelling and Building the Reality

Interview with Aidan Mercer, Bentley Systems
Bentley Systems held its latest annual Year in Infrastructure Conference in London, UK. The event proved to be an excellent opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at Bentley, a leading provider of software solutions for advancing infrastructure. 'GIM International' talked with Aidan Mercer, global industry marketing director for utilities and government. In this in-depth discussion, he zooms in on the role the company plays in advancing the world’s infrastructure and how geomatics is a key element of many of Bentley’s applications. (By Wim van Wegen, content manager, GIM International) We’re hearing a lot about reality modelling at Bentley’s Year... (read more)

3D Cadastre Modelling in Russia

Assessment of Added Value
Russia has the intention to develop and implement a 3D cadastre. A Russian-Dutch project on 3D cadastre modelling assessed the added value of a 3D cadastre. At present, the system of state cadastre and real estate registration in the Russian Federation is based on the 2D representation of objects including land parcels, buildings and structures. However, the current approach does not cover all situations of the real 3D world. Examples of such situations impeding cadastre and rights registration are: multilevel complexes, intersections of various objects in space, underground and elevated engineering networks, etc. The project included prototype development and a... Modelling Prague Castle with a UAS

Capturing a Highly Secured Site from the Air
In a recent project to obtain detailed and accurate orthoimages and 3D models to support technical staff in maintaining Prague Castle in the Czech Republic, the site was captured by UAS photogrammetry. Videos and georeferenced panoramic images were also taken as a service to documentalists and to provide the basis for virtual tours for tourists. Prague Castle and its surroundings are heavily secured sites and special permission was required to conduct the air survey. Learn more about this unique project here. By Jakub Karas, Upvision, Czech Republic From the 9th century onwards Prague Castle, located on the banks of the River... (read more)

OGC Supports European Data Modelling Workshop

The Open Geospatial Consortium will join EUROSDR, AGILE, JRC and ELF in presenting an important technical workshop focused on the geospatial elements of data models. The workshop will be held from 28 January (noon) to 30 January (noon) 2015 at the Danish Geodata Agency, Copenhagen, Denmark. National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies and other spatial data infrastructure (SDI) content providers are facing increasing demand for making well documented data in known data models available as standardised web-services. National e-government initiatives require spatial data to be modelled seamlessly with non-spatial data. INSPIRE puts requirements on GML application schemas and web service standards,... (read more)

Investigation of 3D Modelling Techniques

3D Modelling and Web-based Visualisation of Cultural Heritage Objects
The rapid developments in the fields of photogrammetry, laser scanning, computer vision and robotics provide highly accurate 3D data. 3D models that can be created from such types of data are extremely effective and intuitive for present-day users who have stringent requirements and high expectations. Depending on the complexity of the objects for the specific case, various technological methods can be applied. Read on for a comparison of three technologies, based on real projects, including an assessment of their suitability for web-based visualisation of numerous objects of interest. 3D visualisation and proper documentation of cultural objects helps to preserve the history... Time-space Modelling with Terrestrial Lidar

Monitoring Ice Cliff Evolution of the Miage Glacier, Italy, with ILRIS-3D
The Miage Glacier at Mont Blanc Massif, with an area totalling 11km2, is the third largest glacier in Italy. Time-space modelling of the lakebed and glacier walls carried out with terrestrial Lidar revealed that the ice cliff had retreated more than 45m between July 2003 and September 2004. The Miage Lake area, which has been a tourist attraction and object of study for decades, has been affected by at least seventeen drainage events over the past hundred years, the most recent just last year. Observations during this last event suggest that an increased discharge of water from the lake, resulting... (read more)

3D Modelling of Shukhov Tower

Using Laser Scanning to Model a Russian Radio Tower
The 90-year-old Shukhov Tower in Moscow, Russia, is not only in a state of severe disrepair but the 150m-high steel construction is also under-documented. To support restoration initiatives or, in case of unexpected collapse, to enable the tower to be observed virtually, the authors carried out ground-based laser scanning using seven scan positions to create a detailed 3D model. Built in the period from 1919 to 1922, the radio tower at Shabolovka is an icon of Soviet broadcasting and a world-renowned monument of Russian avant-garde architecture. Today it is called Shukhov Tower after its designer V.G. Shukhov (1853-1939), an outstanding... (read more)
