Real-Time Web Forecasting

Snowflake Software has finished a pilot project the UK Met Office. The pilot project was a response to the needs of the UK's highway authorities to respond to continuously changing weather conditions on the roads. Its results will be presented at Geo Web in Vancouver. The pilot concept was underpinned by OGC compliant Web Feature Servers and Web Map Servers. Snowflake Software's Web Feature Server - GO Publisher - serves detailed forecast data which is being updated every six hours. The forecast data predicts a range of road conditions including hazards at high spatial and temporal resolution. Because the client... (read more)

Pioneering Real-time Visualisation

Headquartered in Tel-Aviv (Israel) and operating globally, Eternix is a software developer focused on products and solutions for high-performance visualisation of geospatial data. In recent years, the company has established itself as a pioneer in real-time 3D visualisation, an area quickly gaining popularity and in increasing demand across all domains. Though still a relatively young organisation, Eternix has been successfully challenging major incumbents in the geo-visualisation industry. Launching the company in 2006 to answer the growing need for advanced geospatial visualisation solutions, the founders recognised the great commercial market potential of sophisticated visualisation software for GIS professionals. Eternix was registered... (read more)

Real-time Deformation Monitoring

Trimble has introduced today two new features for its Trimble 4D Control software solution for monitoring systems. The features include support for geotechnical sensors and a user-friendly Web Module. The solution has been developed for monitoring dams, bridges, buildings, pipeline support piers, large-scale construction and excavation sites, underground and open pit mines, landslides, tunnels, and other structures. The announcement was made at the XIV International Congress of the International Society for Mine Surveying in South Africa.Trimble 4D Control software is a solution for both real-time and postprocessed monitoring. The fully scalable and versatile approach of the system makes it easy... (read more)

Real-Time Data Access

Decatur Utilities in Alabama recently upgraded its IT to provide all 165 of its employees with up-to-date network and customer data, a move that will reduce labour cost and improve outage response. The comprehensive solution, based on GIS technology from Esri and Esri partner 3-GIS, allows utility staff to access, update, and share information in real time throughout the company. Decatur Utilities, a city-owned utility, provides service to more than 22,000 residential customers and 3,000 businesses. In keeping with its mission statement "to provide safe, reliable utility services at the lowest possible rate and meet the needs of customers and... (read more)

Real-time Real Fast Deformation Analysis

Leica Geosystems has added a software module to its GeoMoS Monitoring Software. Leica GeoMoS HiSpeed is a professional software tool for deformation analysis of high-frequency data. Together with a high-precision tilt sensor, it provides fast and easy-to-understand interpretations of GNSS results for a broad range of monitoring applications.     Leica GeoMoS HiSpeed software detects, analyses, and visualises movements and deformations of bridges, high-rise buildings, dams, and oilrigs or other structures that require reliable deformation monitoring. As a standalone program or seamlessly integrated into Leica GeoMoS, the software allows management of high data volumes. Permanent, 24/7 control and insight into... (read more)

Real-time Oil Spill Detection

In September-November ScanEx has performed tests with real-time water oil spills detection technique using RADARSAT-1 space images, along the northern coastline of the Caspian Sea. The data reception and processing cycle includes the universal UniScan ground station and ScanEx SAR Processor and ScanEx Image Processor software. Data processing software products provide for manual and automatic detection of oil slicks on the sea surface. Positive results were obtained after the technique testing for oil spills detection on the Caspian and White Seas. The average RADARSAT-1 data processing and oil detection time constituted 15-20 minutes. RADARSAT-1 space images, received by the ScanEx... (read more)

Near-real Time Snow Information

Satellite information on snow cover is now available through ESA's GlobSnow project soon after it snows. As well as posing a hazard to communities through transportation shutdowns and floods, snow cover is one of the most important elements influencing the planet's climate, meteorology and water systems. Understanding snow conditions helps us to predict floods and advance climate studies. Seasonal changes in snow cover mostly occur in the northern hemisphere. The average winter expanse in these regions affects 20-40 million sq km, with an equivalent water volume of 2000-3000 cubic km - about 1,000,000,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The sparseness of meteorological... (read more)

Real-time Snow Twitter Updates Mapped

In the UK, snow updates generated by Twitter Users are mapped immediately. Doing so, a real time snow update is visible online. The tweets with #uksnow in the message and are mapped. Users can add a snow intensity rating and images. The messages are mapped, based on the post code in the body of the updates or the added geolocation. The service is at the moment limited to the UK. Users can set preferences on how long ratings should be kept on the map, also zero rates can be ignored. For mobile users, developer @benmarsh has made a special version available. (read more)

Real-time Noise and Air Quality Monitoring

Sensaris is reporting the first trial for its environmental sensor series. Air pollution is one of the most important factors affecting the quality of life and the health of the increasingly urban population. Considered separately, air pollution policy is insufficient to reach climate targets and climate policy is not enough to reach air quality targets for example with respect to ozone, an air pollutant which will become more of a problem as the climate gets warmer.     Currently, the data of the different pollutants measured at the different stations in a city are typically aggregated to a single number,... Real-time Mapping of Illegal Amazon Deforestation

Remote sensing solutions provider DMC International Imaging Ltd (DMCii, UK) has signed a contract with Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) to deliver near-real-time satellite imagery to monitor forest-clearing in the Amazon rainforest and target illegal logging as it happens. INPE is experienced in the use of satellite imagery to monitor deforestation, providing information central to Brazil’s war on deforestation that has cut deforestation rates by 78% since 2004. The space agency’s DETER service uses regular satellite images to detect forest clearance as it happens rather than surveying the damage afterwards, guiding Brazil’s enforcement officers to provide effective forest...
