IDS GeoRadar Introduces Remote Sensing Monitoring System

IDS GeoRadar, a leading provider of interferometric technology solutions and multi-frequency, multi-channel Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) worldwide, has launched HYDRA-G, a radar-based technology solution specifically developed to support construction companies and geotechnical engineers in monitoring civil structures and cut-slopes. HYDRA-G is a compact, remote sensing monitoring system able to provide real time monitoring of sub-millimetric deformations in buildings, dams, tunnels, and cut-slopes, and trigger early-warning alerts in case of impending collapses to evacuate people and machinery at risk. C&H has been among the first companies to invest in the technology for civil structure and cut-slope monitoring. Since the very first phases... (read more)

Remote Sensing Technology Reveals WWII Escape Tunnel

A team of archaeologists and geoscientists using remote sensing techniques have discovered an escape tunnel in Lithuania dating from World War II. The narrow tunnel is 35 metres long and was hand-dug by Jewish prisoners who were being held captive at Ponar. Up to 100,000 people – most of them Lithuanian and Polish Jews –are estimated to have been massacred by the Nazis at the site in the Ponar forest, just outside the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, between 1941 and 1944. Hand-dug Tunnel According to the researchers, in 1943, as Soviet forces were closing in on the region, the German... (read more)

India to launch Remote Sensing Satellite

India plans to launch an advanced Remote Sensing Satellite, Cartosat-2A, on April 28 along with a Third World Satellite (TWSAT) and eight nano satellites on board home-built polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) from its spaceport of Sriharikota.   ISRO sources said that Cartosat-2A is a follow-up of Cartosat-2, launched in January last year. Cartosat-2A will carry a panchromatic camera capable of providing scene-specific spot imageries for cartographic and other applications. TWSAT would be a co-passenger, along with eight nano satellites, which have come from countries including the Netherlands, Canada and Germany, ISRO sources said. TWSAT is the first satellite in... Achievements In Earth Remote Sensing Recognised

NASA and the US Department of the Interior presented the 2011 William T. Pecora awards to Alan H. Strahler, professor of geography and environment at Boston University, and to the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing at a ceremony held on Tuesday 15th November 2011 in Herndon, USA. Strahler was recognised for his contributions to remote-sensing science, leadership and education, which have improved the fundamental understanding of the remote-sensing process and its applications for observing land surface properties. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing received the group award for outstanding collaboration across national boundaries.   The awards were presented at the... (read more)

GIS and Remote Sensing Congress in Morocco

The Faculty of Sciences Ain Chock of the University Hassan II Casablanca, Morocco, is organising the second edition of the International Congress on Remote Sensing and GIS (ICRSG), to be held from 25-27 June 2014 in Casablanca. The event will be an opportunity for a large number of national and international researchers to discuss and exchange knowledge and expertise in the field of GIS and remote sensing. Interest in spatial technology has continued to grow in Morocco ever since GIS and remote sensing were introduced as subjects at Moroccan universities. Various scientific events are organised at the national level which... (read more)

Thermal Remote Sensing Makes City Bearable

In a series of coordinated activities, called Thermopolis 2009, a group of thermal remote-sensing and urban-climate experts from Greece and Spain carried out ground-based measurements at various sites in and around the Greek capital, whilst aircraft equipped with sensitive instrumentation passed overhead and satellites orbiting Earth acquired data simultaneously from space.   The Thermopolis campaign in Athens began on 18 July 2009, when two aircraft made simultaneous flights over the city. One aircraft, operated by INTA, Spain, took measurements with a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer called the Airborne Hyperspectral System. The spectrometer is sensitive to both visible and thermal infrared wavelengths,... (read more)

Remote Sensing Congress in Latin America

Between October the 4th and 8th of this year, the LARS 2010 Exploradores del Sur (Latin American Remote Sensing Week) congress is to take place in Santiago de Chile. This event will gather the most important companies and organisations dedicated to geospace sciences. The encounter pretends to become the meeting point for the scientific and academic community in the region and an opportunity to share experiences, new technologies and applied uses of this discipline. The Chilean Air Force´s Air Photogrammetry Service (SAF), institution in charge of organising this symposium, is looking forward to stand out Chile as a referent in... (read more)

Vietnam Plans Second Remote Sensing Satellite

Having successfully launched its first remote sensing satellite as recently as 7 May 2013, Vietnam has already announced the launch of the second satellite, VNREDSat-1B, scheduled to go into orbit by 2017. Vietnam has become the fifth ASEAN nation to own a remote sensing satellite after Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Vietnam has reached an agreement with Belgium upon which Belgian companies under the auspices of Spacebel, a Belgian software engineering company operating in the Space and Earth monitoring applications sectors, will manufacture the VNREDSat-1B. The second remote sensing satellite will help to monitor natural resources and natural disasters, and... (read more)
