Key Topic of Intergeo 2016: Smart City

By taking Smart City as a key topic, Intergeo 2016 is focussing on a multi-faceted issue that will shape the future. The preview of the leading international event for the geospatial community in Hamburg was attended by renowned experts from industry, science and public authorities. During their discussions, all were agreed that cities must and will become more intelligent – not because that is a natural consequence of digitalisation, but because it benefits society. Intelligent geodata is a crucial prerequisite for any such development. In April 2016, the patron of Intergeo, the DVW German Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land... (read more)

Ordnance Survey Seeking European Smart City Standards

Ordnance Survey (OS) is to create a smart city standards-based technologies business framework for the European Union’s ESPRESSO project. ESPRESSO is being led by the Open Geospatial Consortium, and OS - working closely with key European bodies - will develop a strategic growth map for smart cities. Supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers, OS will also conduct analysis of existing and emerging economic, financial (including crowd-funding) and procurement models. OS is aiming to gather expert information and advice from commercial organisations and public sector bodies across the globe, and so is appealing to them to input into this framework and become key influencers... Use of GIS in Smart City Projects

Managing and Visualising Geospatial Data in a User-friendly Environment
The smart city concept is developing very quickly around the world, because it provides a comprehensive digital environment that improves the efficiency and security of urban systems and reinforces the involvement of citizens in urban development. This concept is based on the use of geospatial data concerning the urban built environment, the natural environment and urban services. The successful implementation of a smart city project requires the development of a digital system that can manage and visualise the geospatial data in a user-friendly environment. The geographic information system (GIS) offers advanced and user-friendly capabilities for smart city projects. This article... (read more)
