Thai Surveying Satellite Theos

Thailand's first geography-surveying satellite ''Theos'' is expected to be launched into orbit October 2007. The six-billion-baht satellite, officially called Thailand Earth Observation System (Theos), is being built by France-based Astrium S.A.S. Equipped with two cameras, the satellite is expected to help the government better plan natural disaster management as it will be able to help monitor areas prone to floods and coastal areas at risk of being hit by tsunami waves. ''The most important benefit to us is the development of Thai personnel in the area of space technology,'' Science and Technology Minister Yongyuth Yuthavong said. More than 20 Thai... (read more)

Mailbox - Surveying the Bahamas

GIM Statement In order to address the personnel shortage in geomatics, a company involved in the field has a corporate responsibility to promote careers in geomatics and help schools and universities attract more students. Pushpa Gamage, Sri Lanka: "It is a wise decision, since the Geomatics field is still limited to higher education only." Anim Vincent, Ghana: "Geomatics should be introduced into our secondary schools, especially in Ghana." Garfield Young, UK: "Marketing and very active promotion of the exciting discipline of Geomatics is critical for its growth. Early intervention is important, such as the introduction of spatial-science courses in pre-tertiary... (read more)

Revolution in Highway Surveying

Using StreetMapper 360 in the Netherlands
It's a familiar sight: roads are closed due to road works and surveyors doing road measurements. Besides causing traffic delays, these surveys are costly - traffic has to be managed and employees brought in to work night shifts. Add to this the pressure to deliver new designs as quickly as possible, and the impact this has on accuracy down the line. Now, Dutch surveying specialist Geomaat has completed pre-construction surveys without the need for road closures by using the StreetMapper 360 system from 3D Laser Mapping. The measurements were taken with sub-centimetre accuracy while travelling at normal traffic speeds.  ... (read more)

Surveying and Positioning Systems

North Group
The world of surveying and positioning is experiencing an amazing transformation that began just recently, and goes hand in hand with the superior push in technology democratisation due to the popularity of consumer and professional hand devices. Almost any phone is now more powerful than our first desktop computers and satellite positioning seems to be permeating into everything from locating friends to autopilot planes and cars. North Group has experienced this change in technology since its first totally automated truck fleet management system was put to work in 2000 in Europe, USA and Mexico. The hardware and communications involved in... (read more)

Surveying for Belvedere Waste Project

Maidenhead-based civil engineers, Costain, have purchased a combination of Trimble R8 GNSS receivers and Trimble S6 robotic total stations for use on the Riverside Resource Recovery Facility currently under construction at Belvedere in South-East London. These instruments will help Costain to deliver the main buildings, jetties, roads and offices for the GBP350 million project which is being developed by Cory Environmental and built by Swiss plant construction company Von Roll Inova.   The Trimble solution means streamlined data handling and less time in the office. Key to this is the ability to switch between optical and GPS instruments with a... (read more)

Data Integration for Coastal Surveying

Combining Laser Scanner and Bathymetric Sensor
When surveying the coastline, the integration of bathymetric (below sea level) and laser scanning (above sea level) data causes problems due to the different imaging properties. However, by ensuring that the different data sets have been accurately georeferenced and oriented, a complete and accurate model of the terrain above and below sea level can be obtained. This technique was employed to survey the area of Portovenere in Italy, including the San Pietro church located on a steeply sloping rocky promontory, with positional accuracies in the order of 5cm. Highway Surveying Project Costs Halved

Dutch surveying company Geomaat is capturing millimetre-accurate measurements in record times to support a range of highway design, construction and maintenance projects. Using the mobile laser mapping system StreetMapper, and specially developed point cloud software, Geomaat can calculate highly accurate cutting, milling and asphalt figures, create as-built models and undertake change detection.   Jolle Jelle de Vries, Managing Director of Geomaat, said that in the past these types of measurement were undertaken using total stations which was time-consuming, and therefore costly, and had a big impact on other road users. For example a 10km-stretch of highway would have taken at... (read more)
