SSJ-100 Airplane Crash Site Imagery

ScanEx RDC, Russia, has received and analysed detailed images from the IKONOS satellite of the Russian Sukhoi SuperJet-100 (SSJ-100) airplane crash site. The accident occurred on the demonstration flight on 9 May 2012 in Indonesia. Real-time satellite data were delivered to the EMERCOM of Russia.

The plane crash site and wrecks are visible on the image, acquired from IKONOS on 13 May 2012. The size of evident damage to the vegetation cover on the crash spot is 140m long and 70m wide at the widest part. Several pieces of airplane debris can be seen at this spot with the damaged vegetation, according to ScanEx's Operational Monitoring Department head, Artem Nikitsky.

According to Sukhoi civil airplanes, the Sukhoi SuperJet-100 jetliner, piloted by the Russian crew, disappeared from radar screens of Halim airport, Jakarta, during the demonstration flight in Indonesia on 9 May 2012. The crash site was detected as a result of the Indonesian search and rescue team activities on 10 May on the eastern slope of the Salak mountain at a height of around 1,700m. The rescue operation was complicated by the difficult terrain profile where the airplane crash occurred. The wreckage was found on a steep slope.
