New Zealand's LINZ is giving Canterbury high-school students the chance to become even more actively and personally involved in the rebuild of their region – and to win prizes in the process. Run by LINZ – with Canterbury University and Environment Canterbury – 'Building Our Footprints' is a crowdsourcing contest aimed at digitally capturing 'building footprints' in Selwyn, Waimakariri and Christchurch. »»
An Awakening in India: Interview with Bharat Lohani
Since the July 2014 issue of GIM International is dedicated to Lidar point clouds, it should come as no surprise that it contains an interview with a leading expert on this exciting aspect of the geomatics spectrum. Dr Bharat Lohani, who is leading the Lidar teaching and research group at the renowned Indian institute of IIT Kanpur and is a member of the magazine’s editorial board, was a logical candidate. URISA has announced the results of its 2014 Board of Directors’ Election. Rebecca Somers will become president-elect of the association and Valrie Grant, Kevin Mickey and Martin Roche will begin their terms as members of the Board of Directors, at the close of GIS-Pro 2014: URISA's 52nd Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, being held from 8 to 11 September. »»
 
ICC 2015: Call for Abstracts   25/07/2014
The 27th International Cartographic Conference will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 23 to 28 August 2015. This conference is taking place for the first time in Brazil and only for the second time in South America. A call for abstracts has now been issued by the organisation. »»
National Showcaves of Wales Mapped with Handheld Laser Scanner   25/07/2014
Students and staff from the University of South Wales have mapped in detail for the first time the spectacular underground cave system Dan-yr-Ogof or National Showcaves of Wales. Using a ZEB1 handheld laser scanner from 3D Laser Mapping, the group was able to capture millions of highly accurate measurements. From these point clouds, highly detailed 3D models have been created showing some of the cave system’s most intricate details. These include the thousands of delicate stalactites which are a highlight of the popular tourist attraction, the Cathedral Cave. »»
 
AfricaGEO 2014: Inspring Geomatics Meeting Place   24/07/2014
The AfricaGEO Conference, held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1 to 3 July 2014, was a successful and inspiring geomatics event. Over 610 delegates from 28 countries attended the function, which featured 180 exhibitors and saw over 90 papers being presented. The participation in the presentations and the interaction amongst delegates was considerable, and often led to some interesting and thought-provoking debates. »»
