Biography

Markku Markkula is the president of the Helsinki-Uusimaa Region (chair of the board). He is vice-president of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), having been the CoR president from 2015-2017. He has been a member of the Espoo City Council since 1980, in influential roles including the chair of the council, of the board and of the Committee for Urban Planning. He has an MSc in Production Management from the Helsinki University of Technology. He has worked for years as the advisor to the Aalto University presidents and as the Director of Lifelong Learning Institute Dipoli at the Helsinki University of Technology. From 1995-2003, he was a Member of the Finnish Parliament, during which his international role included the presidency of the Council of the European Parliamentary Technology Assessment (EPTA) network.
