Successful Launch of Second SpaceDataHighway Satellite

The EDRS-C satellite, the second node of the SpaceDataHighway network (also known as the European Data Relay System or 'EDRS'), has been successfully launched into geostationary orbit at 31° East by an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. After a test period it will double the transmission capacity of the system in order to serve two observation satellites simultaneously and provide redundant back-up for the SpaceDataHighway. Space-based Dam Monitoring Project Secures New Funding

HR Wallingford, a specialist in water research, will broaden its space-based dam monitoring system, DAMSAT, to include water dams in a bid to reduce the risk of failures. The UK Space Agency has extended the organization’s funding following a pilot project to monitor tailings dams used to store toxic mine waste in Peru. Ultimately the technology could be employed worldwide to reduce the risks to those living downstream of dams. UAV Maps New Zealand Beach to Create Detailed 3D Model

A landslide on Clifton Beach, New Zealand, earlier this year injured two Korean tourists when they were washed out to sea. Following this event, the beach was closed while Hastings District Council undertook a risk assessment. Flying companies specializing in 3D mapping now have until 4 September to apply to provide services that will help transform how regional councils in New Zealand plan investments and prepare for climate change.
