Low-cost versus High-end Systems for Automated 3D Data Acquisition

Modelling an Early Mediaeval Ring Fort in Germany
Topographic mapping is a standard surveying task and the instrument of choice used to be a total station. The use of terrestrial laser scanning has become popular over the past decade or more, but today there is a much wider choice of methods for the acquisition of a digital surface model (DSM). For the 3D recording of an early mediaeval ring fort, the use of three modern systems was investigated: a portable (kinematic) laser scanning system, a static terrestrial laser scanning system (TLS) and a photogrammetric unmanned aerial system (UAS). The systems were compared to each other based on the... (read more)

Ultralight Aircraft and Lidar Acquisition of Power Lines

In August 2015, IMAO performed its first flights with an Ultralight Savannah ST – a two-seat ultralight aircraft – for Lidar and photo acquisitions in the south-west of France for Omexom (Vinci Energies Group). This was the first project in which IMAO had used an ultralight aircraft for power-line applications. Its success bodes very well for future acquisitions in this field. IMAO had been very closely interested in this new tool for a while. The company, which specialises in acquiring aerial photos and Lidar by aircraft, began last year and purchased the ultralight. This summer, IMAO flew 300km sections of high-voltage lines for Omexom, in various French... (read more)

Sercel Sells Land Seismic Acquisition System to BGP

Sercel has been awarded a contract by BGP to supply land seismic equipment for a large onshore 3D seismic survey in the Middle East. The contract includes 100,000 Sercel 508XT channels equipped with strings of 12 SG-10 geophones. This large-scale 3D project encompasses several diverse environments, including areas with limited access such as industrial complexes, agricultural land and urban areas. The 508XT system is developed for these challenging conditions; its fault-tolerant cross technology (X-Tech) architecture, including local storage and automatic data rerouting, simplifies field operations and enables continuous acquisition. Mega-crew surveys Designed for high-resolution, high-productivity surveys, the 508XT will operate... (read more)

What Surveyors Value Most about Their Geodata Acquisition Method

There are numerous software solutions available on the market for the photogrammetric processing of digital images and to generate 3D spatial data. Geoprofessionals can use the photogrammetric software to create orthomosaics, point clouds and models. Some photogrammetric software solutions are suitable for large-format images from aerial cameras and satellite processing, while others are especially developed for small and medium-format digital images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’). The Pix4D and Agisoft PhotoScan software solutions are currently out in front, but many geospatial professionals also mentioned Inpho (Trimble), ContextCapture (Bentley), DroneDeploy, Photomod (Racurs), Correlator3D (SimActive) and SURE (nFrames) as... How to Choose Between the Many Geodata Acquisition Systems?

When the need arises for new acquisition equipment, whether because of expansion due to business success or to replace outdated tools, how can geospatial professionals decide between the countless alternatives on offer? Read on for some pointers from independent geomatics consultant Mathias Lemmens. How can we choose between the many geodata acquisition systems when our equipment needs replacing or we’re expanding due to business success? This seemingly simple question is surprisingly hard to answer, so I will outline some considerations. Improving workflows focused on a few, well-defined applications entails other concerns than when multiple business fields are covered. If your... (read more)
