Location Intelligence via Web-based Mapping Platforms

Business Intelligence Goes Spatial
Location Intelligence combines Business Intelligence with spatial analysis and includes the visualisation of various data on a map. Location Intelligence is an important tool for optimising business processes, business structures and customer relationships. Although some initial investment is necessary with respect to licenses, data, training and integration efforts, various companies have already discovered the benefits and have been using a classic Geographic Information System (GIS) since the early 1990s. The Next Generation of Location-based Services

The main motivation of governments in sharing data with the public is to stimulate economic growth by enabling the creation of new products. One of the areas that could benefit from open data initiatives is that of location-based services (LBS). If access to relevant data sources is granted, next-generation LBS could do much more than ‘just’ proposing an itinerary from A to B. However, challenges must be addressed before open data initiatives can result in expected benefits. Whether the aim is to boost business performance, understand interactions between environmental phenomena or make strategic political decisions, access to information is a... (read more)

Protecting Location Privacy Brings Opportunities to the Geosector

Since members of the geosector are well versed in potential applications of geoinformation and its fusion with other data sources, they are best equipped to devise and test technology-based solutions for location privacy-related challenges. That is the opinion of Dara Seidl, a young expert on geoprivacy, who won the first pan-American master’s thesis contest on geoinformation. Dara Seidl was selected by a jury of worldwide experts as the winner of the ‘Prize for the Outstanding Master’s Thesis in Cartography, Geodesy and Geo-Information 2015’ for her thesis titled ‘Striking the Balance: Privacy and Spatial Pattern Preservation in Masked GPS Data’.
