Digitizing Hydrocarbon Storage Tanks

An Efficient and Safe Pre-maintenance Analysis
Carrying out essential maintenance on storage tanks can be complex. This case study outlines how a 3D topographic tank survey enabled identification of which areas of the tanks required maintenance. After capturing an image of the tanks with a laser scanner, the geospatial data was visualized, resulting in the full project as a digital twin. This project is an example of how technologies are changing the traditional approach to surveying techniques. The API Refinery of Ancona SpA is a petrochemical plant located along the Flaminia Route in the seaside resort of Falconara Marittima, Italy. Built on an area of 700,000... (read more)

Digital Technology as Leitmotif

In his latest column, Wim van Wegen reflects on digital technology as the leitmotif in Germany's role as a powerhouse within the geospatial industry. Traditionally, Germany is the heart of the geospatial industry at this time of the year, with Intergeo taking place in either September or October. The annual trade fair and conference is a major gathering of mapping and surveying professionals from all around the world. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, everything is different this year, and Intergeo was being held digitally from 13-15 October. For me, it felt almost surreal to not be travelling to Germany for... SBG Systems Releases Virtual Base Station Feature in Qinertia

SBG Systems is introducing the Virtual Base Station feature in its in-house post-processing software called Qinertia. Geospatial professionals benefit from an optimal centimetric position accuracy in all their projects, even for corridor mapping and in poorly covered RTK areas. Qinertia is SBG Systems’ in-house GNSS and INS post-processing software. It gives access to offline RTK corrections from more than 7,000 base stations located in 164 countries. Trajectory and orientation are then greatly improved by processing inertial data and raw GNSS observables in forward and backward directions. Corridor survey accuracy Qinertia PPK software now includes a brand new Virtual Base Stations... (read more)
