3D Mapping Portal

Agency9 (Sweden) has entered into a partnership with the aerial survey company Slagboom en Peeters in The Netherlands, to deliver a geoportal for which users can view its data products, currently “Geo-Oblique” and Orthophoto in one seamless integrated view. Unlike other portals in the market the user can conveniently see an object from all possible angles and use the data view that is best for the application. Additional data types will be introduced later this year. Adding Oblique Viewer extends the value of the 3DMaps platform as the leading solution for visualisation of 3D geospatial data. The combination of different... (read more)

Column: 3D Mobile Mapping

Over the last few years street-level mobile mapping and reality capturing has quietly become one of the most important geospatial mapping technologies. There are already hundreds of mapping vehicles collecting vast amounts of geospatial data. But what we see today is only the start, believes Stephan Nebiker from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW).   In the future, accurate and dense 3D representations of the urban environment along traffic corridors and within buildings will be captured and created fully automatically and upated regularly if not in real-time. These digital realities will serve a multitude of purposes, including... (read more)

TatukGIS and Geological 3D Mapping

TatukGIS recently implemented support for geological 3D maps for incorporating multiple, vertically spaced digital elevation models and other layers in the same map project. This was done in response to requests from some customers, mostly geologists, for the ability to create map projects involving multiple 3D surfaces. Such a project might involve, for example, an aerial image draped on a 3D DEM surface topology layer along with 3D representations of other layers representing perhaps underground bedrock, hydrology, infrastructure, or modelled hydrocarbon and mineral deposits. The vertical level of each layer can be managed by using its 3D FalseZ property, such... (read more)

Full Frontal Mapping in 3D

Cliff surveys are traditionally performed with fixed-wing aircraft that collect nadir photos. However, one particular California bluff required the cliff’s face to be surveyed for an erosion study. A photogrammetry company used the opportunity to test the viability of accurately triangulating oblique images and mapping them in 3D stereo. The company not only met tight data specifications, but also developed a new technique for cliff-face surveys. Photogrammetry specialist Robert Lafica and his company, Central Coast Aerial Mapping, have been producing detailed 3D stereo-based topographic maps, orthophotos and orthomosaics and surface models since 1977. Although he has performed many traditional cliff... (read more)
