The Revolution of Drone-carried Sensors

GIM International interviews 3D Robotics
The world of professional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’) is changing. It is a matter of ‘survival of the fittest’ in terms of the hardware aspect: UAV manufacturers. The interest is now visibly shifting towards payloads and software to capture, visualise and process the data; UAVs are the apparatus, but it’s the sensors and software that really count. GIM International decided to touch base with a company that serves as a good example of the current transformation, and spoke to Chris Anderson, CEO, and Daniel McKinnon, vice president, from 3D Robotics. The Shifting World of Professional Mapping

GIM International interviews Christoph Strecha, CEO and founder of Pix4D
Christoph Strecha, founder and CEO of Pix4D, reveals that he foresees big changes in the geospatial industry in this interview with 'GIM International'. Over the past decade, photogrammetry from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or ‘drone’) data has proven itself as an effective method to capture high-resolution aerial imagery, while drones have demonstrated their value for mapping and surveying professionals as platforms for carrying payloads that include a variety of sensors. One of the leading developers of software solutions to convert the imagery into high-end geospatial solutions is Pix4D, which has established itself as a leader in the business. Christoph Strecha,... Recent Developments in Close-range Photogrammetry

A Measurement Technology in Transition
Dramatic advances in automatic digital image analysis have opened up new applications and made photogrammetry applicable for a broader field of users that lack specific knowledge of photogrammetry. Megatrends such as Industry 4.0, building information modelling (BIM) and the digital transformation are driving the advancement of 3D measurement technologies, both in terms of high-end systems and low-cost sensors. New technical challenges such as autonomous driving or unmanned aerial vehicles are demanding innovative sensor systems, but also extended maps and models of the environment. Modern approaches such as structure from motion (SfM), simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) or visual odometry are... (read more)
