(read more)

From Laser Scans to 3D Models with New FARO Software

The newly designed PointSense for Revit software from FARO introduces new functionalities for significantly improving evaluation and conversion of point cloud data to Building Information Models (BIMs). Laser scanning is the most efficient method for capturing existing field conditions for buildings. PointSense for Revit aims to accelerate and simplify the analysis and design of this data directly in Autodesk Revit. BIM has become a standard in the planning and management of new facilities. In an increasing number of countries BIM is now mandatory by law for new construction. Autodesk Revitis an established and important BIM programme for architects, engineers and... (read more)

Pointfuse Launches Laser Scanning Software Suite

Pointfuse is releasing Pointfuse 2018, a suite of laser scanning software which includes a cloud-based data processing service called Pointfuse Bolt. Designed to promote and support the capture of digitised ‘as-built’ data, Pointfuse 2018 will help BIM practitioners create intelligent data that is easy to consume and easy to share. Pointfuse Bolt is powered by unlimited parallelised computing on an industry-standard secure platform to process point clouds captured during the design, build and delivery of complex construction projects. Offering a scalable yet affordable solution, the Bolt service reduces processing times and minimises the IT requirement for expensive hardware whilst maximising... (read more)

GEO Business 2017: Day Two

The last session of the conference Day One included a presentation on cyber security. Like health and safety, much of this topic is obvious - when you think about it. Many readers will remember the British government’s flagship BIM project at HM Prison Cookham Wood, but was it wise to display the 3D model so proudly on the internet? (By Richard Groom, contributing editor) The second day of GEO Business was only fractionally less busy than the first. I decided to start with a few workshop sessions. The workshops included one which presented GPR (ground penetrating radar) applications for investigating... (read more)

Bentley Systems Acquires Synchro Software

Bentley Systems has announced the acquisition of Synchro Software, specialised in 4D construction modelling software for scheduling and project management. Synchro, which can be described as a 'construction time machine', has been globally adopted, in particular, for building and civil infrastructure projects. The acquisition broadens Bentley’s ProjectWise construction offerings, which already include ConstructSim, a solution for 4D construction modelling in project delivery of industrial plants. With construction project management in 4D, benefits of BIM can extend throughout infrastructure project delivery and asset life cycles, as traditionally disconnected workflows become digital workflows. The strong growth of London-based Synchro, since the introduction... (read more)

British Information Modelling Event Witnesses New Innovations

The second British Information Modelling (BIM) event proved a success with 100 delegates heading to the Arup’s central London headquarters during the last week of October. A fitting opening event for Digital Construction Week – which followed later in the week – British Information Modelling saw a lively discussion between the audience and a panel comprising of Cobus Bothma and Martin Coyne of KPF, Shaun Farrell of Turner & Townsend and Andrew Norrie of Graphisoft.  The BIM-focused event was organised by 3D Repo, the company behind multi-award winning technology that allows complex BIM datasets from multiple sources to be stored... 3D GIS in China

Chongqing Survey Institute Realised What Many Still Dream Of
Since 1998, the Chongqing Survey Institute (CSI) has been managing the 3D geoinformation database, including terrain, buildings, underground pipelines, geology and underground buildings, of the Chinese megapolis of 30 million people. For the commercial market, CSI’s 3D Mobile group focuses on combining the indoor and outdoor environment with e-commerce systems. Meanwhile, its BIM and GIS Integration group concentrates on three fields: geological survey, construction sector and municipal administration. Chongqing is a city of unique topographical and landscape features. It is built on mountains and partially surrounded by the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, making mapping the city a big challenge for...
