Esri and United Nations Create COVID-19 Population Vulnerability Dashboard

Esri has been collaborating with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to create a COVID-19 Population Vulnerability Dashboard. This new interactive tool will provide public health workers, policymakers and the general public with access to useful information on populations vulnerable to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in order to target preparedness and response and to help save lives. The dashboard highlights population vulnerabilities at the national and subnational levels, using data from the latest Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) census samples for 94 countries. It identifies populations at older ages, including those living alone, and includes risk factors for COVID-19... (read more)

Scanning 100 Dutch Railway Stations

Geomaat recently performed extensive 3D laser scanning and 3D modelling for the Dutch railway organization, ProRail. ProRail is the organization that takes care of the entire railway network in the Netherlands, from construction to maintenance. It is essential that the data in the ‘Basic Management Map’ (Basisbeheerkaart) which is used to manage the network, is up to date at all times. ProRail works with various suppliers to map the railway network. One of those suppliers is Geomaat, which recently supported Arcadis on a ProRail project in order to add its own experience in 3D laser scanning and 3D modelling to Arcadis’ extensive railway-related... How Rapid Scanning Provides Support During a Global Health Crisis

Geospatial technology can play an important role in the expansion of hospital capacity in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In this feature, David Fowkes, sales director at 3D mapping and monitoring specialist GeoSLAM, explains how the rapid surveying capabilities of SLAM technology can enable health officials across the globe to quickly and safely assess potential hospital buildings. Around the world we have seen unprecedented efforts to increase capacity in stretched health systems as a result of the spread of coronavirus. In Wuhan, China, the epicentre for the virus, the 269,000 sq ft, thousand-bed Huoshenshan Hospital, was built from scratch in... (read more)

ICEYE SAR Satellite Imagery Available through the ESA Earthnet Third Party Mission

ICEYE is providing its SAR satellite data for assessment via ESA’s Earthnet Third Party Mission (TPM). Through this programme, ESA sponsors the cost to access ICEYE’s SAR data for research and Earth Observation (EO)-based application development. “We are very proud to begin distributing SAR data to the international user community through ESA’s Earthnet Third Party Mission,” said Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and co-founder of ICEYE, a Finland-based global leader in small satellite synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) technology. “ICEYE has always aimed for providing wide and easy access to its SAR data, and this is an excellent step forward in that. ESA’s Earthnet programme... (read more)

Joint ESA/Airbus Satellite Beams EO Data at Speed of Light

The most sophisticated laser communication network ever designed – according to ESA – has gained its second satellite. The European Data Relay System (EDRS) was built to accelerate the flow of information from Earth-observation satellites to people on the ground. The second satellite in the network, EDRS-C, has now passed its user commissioning review and entered into full service. Launched on 6 August 2019, EDRS-C is in geostationary orbit some 36,000 kilometres above Earth. This geostationary position enables the communication satellite to maintain an almost constant connection with Earth-observation (EO) satellites that are closer to the planet’s surface and circle... Online Directory Points Way to Geospatial and Cadastral Information from Europe

European National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registry Authorities (NMCAs) have launched an online directory to help users find official geospatial, land registration and cadastral information and maps from Europe. It is available via the website of EuroGeographics, the not-for-profit membership association for European NMCAs. Users select their country of interest via the online map, and then click on a quick link to the national cadastre portal or geoportal. Mick Cory, secretary general and executive director, EuroGeographics: “Data is important because it supports a range of legal, fiscal, security and other public administrative purposes, and provides reliable, consistent context and clarity to information about people and places. This takes users beyond the national map to a... Remotely Sensed Data for Efficient Data Collection

Taking a Closer Look at Impact from Hundreds of Kilometers above the Earth
When it comes to impact evaluations, remotely sensed data can increase their timeliness, accuracy and relevance for decision-makers. 3ie and New Light Technologies are enhancing the use of geospatial analysis in IEs. Impact evaluations (IEs) have been evolving to fill a critical gap in evidence about the effectiveness of international development programmes and interventions. Because of their ability to determine intervention effectiveness (and cost-effectiveness), the demand for and production of IEs has grown substantially in recent decades. Rigorous evaluation of development interventions and their outcomes has been a perennial challenge across multiple sectors and disciplines. Remotely sensed data allows to... (read more)
