Integrated Coastal Management Act

Surveying Challenges in the South African Coastal Zone
Since time immemorial the seashore has played an evolving but important role in society. In South Africa, the interface between rights in the land and the seashore has been the high water mark (HWM). The Seashore Act No 21 of 1935 (SSA) and the Maritime Zones Act No 15 of 1994 (MZA) governed the extent of these rights. Environmental concern, increasing risks in coastal areas, and the need to approach the management of coastal land and sea in a more holistic manner, has led to the Integrated Coastal Management Act No 24 of 2008 (ICMA), which largely replaces the SSA.... Data Management Services

Solutions from Airbus Defence and Space
Easy access to repositories of space-borne imagery and other geospatial data is becoming increasingly important now that sensors are able to produce petabytes of data in the blink of an eye. The value of imagery to customers relies not only on its quality, but also on the ability to provide easy access to, and management and analysis of, the resulting geodata. Here, the author presents the geodata management services developed by the Geo-Intelligence programme line of Airbus Defence and Space and its strategic partners to serve the diverse needs of a broad spectrum of users. (By Jessi Dick, Airbus Defence... (read more)

Fugro’s Management Structure Changes

Effective 2012, Fugro, Netherlands, will be managed in accordance with a board-of-management model. The increased size of the company makes a more collective decision-making process and more delegation of operational tasks desirable for the ongoing development of the company. This change in management model coincides with the departure of Mr. K.S. Wester who will reach retirement next year.     Fugro will depart from the CEO model, which has been in effect for many years. Effective 1 January 2012 the Board of Management will consist of the following members that are currently already employed by Fugro and whereby the current... (read more)

Construction Data Management

Especially for the construction industry, 12d Solutions have developed 12d Field. This software module allows users to view and utilise entire project models in the field, enjoy real-time set out and pickup capability, import and export to all major file types and interface with most survey instruments.   After 3 years of development and over 18 months of rigorous onsite testing on some of the largest construction sites in Australia, 12d Field is only now being released internationally.   Previously surveyors onsite had access to only a small amount of data which was pre loaded (into a controller) and viewed... Asset Management with Microdrones

One of the latest UAVs is the Microdrone, developed by German company microdrones GmbH. It has been used for a variety of monitoring and surveillance applications, as well as for aerial photogrammetry and infrastructure inventories. It is a mature product and has already been sold to users all over the world. Essentially, the Microdrone is a miniature helicopter with four small, independent rotors. These rotors are computer controlled by small electric motors. Tilts of the rotor blades and heads allow the Microdrone to move in the air in any direction you desire. The Microdrone claims to be stable, which means... (read more)

Indoor Risk Management

A Spatially Enabled Online Tool for Monitoring Workplace Safety
Risk management of power plants, dry docks and many other workplaces is aimed at ensuring the health and safety of workers as well as the people living in the vicinity. A spatially enabled risk management system supports staff safety by reducing or even eliminating incidents. Here, the author describes an online tool which has been developed in the Philippines and has been filed for a patent. In the workplace, faulty wiring may cause a fire, slippery floors may cause workers to fall, and poorly shielded equipment may result in injured limbs. National labour and employment organisations all over the world... (read more)

Interoperability in Disaster Management

However, recent disasters have also shown shortcomings in existing technologies and policies. Pertinent among these are the many barriers that exist in making available and providing the most appropriate (geo-)information and making systems co-operate. Up until now data has been searched by human beings. Automation is provided, but within a specific domain and carrying out dedicated tasks, and thus incapable of delivering intelligence to heterogeneous multi-user groups. The challenges in sharing and analysing geo-information are crucial. Most current geo-data is designed, stored and managed by organisations each under normal conditions having its own mandate and operating largely independently of one... (read more)
