Web Mapping for Education

The latest version of the EDINA Digimap service has gone live. The service is a co-operation of Cadcorp and the EDINA National Data Centre. Launched in 2000, the EDINA Digimap service specialises in the delivery of a number of geographical data resources over the Internet to over 150 academic institutions. National digital map data ranging from Ordnance Survey (OS) products to geology, marine and historical maps can be accessed by staff and students free at point of use. Based on Cadcorp's web mapping software GeognoSIS, the service also utilises a number of licences of Map Modeller, Cadcorp's desktop GIS.The new... (read more)

Mapping an Oil Pipeline

DEMs and Ortho-imagery for Colombia from Dual-band Side-looking Radar
Adverse weather and terrain conditions meant the Cano-Limon oil pipeline in Colombia had never been accurately mapped until orthorectified images and digital elevation models covering an area of 94,000km2 were created using airborne dual-band interferometric IFSAR simultaneously acquired X and P-band data. The authors report on main aspects of the project. The Cano-Limon oil pipeline extends nearly 780km from the Cano-Limon oilfield in Colombia’s Arauca region along the north-western border with Venezuela to a port in Covenas. When fully operational the pipeline can carry up to 20% of Colombian petroleum production, a major source of national revenue. In collaboration with... (read more)

China's Digital Mapping Plan

China’s State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM) has embarked on Digital China, an ambitious project listed in China's 10th five-year plan that aims to map the entire country digitally. The project aims at decision support for the country's leaders in natural disaster prevention and city planning. The state media reported that the mapping project would also include registration of personal details regarding individuals in over 600 Chinese cities and more than 2,000 counties. The SBSM has already created three digital map series of the country with a level of detail comparable to map scales of 1:4 million, 1:1 million... (read more)

Disaster Mapping 2.0

Collaborating via GIS and Geo-webservices
There has been a recent increase in the incidence of major disasters and the damage caused, in terms both of human suffering and economic cost. UNOSAT Mapping The main goal of our research was to see how the current post-disaster mapping operations by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT), under the International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters', could benefit from modern GIS and collaborative web-based mapping technology. The charter aims at providing a unified system of space-data acquisition and delivery to those affected by natural or manmade disaster, and is widely considered a... (read more)

Mapping the Maldives

Photogrammetry was already in existence more than a century ago, although, judging by current standards, only in its infancy. This technology, gradually refined over time and now ripened into maturity, means that today reliable, accurate and detailed geo-data can be acquired of large areas by taking measurements from imagery recorded by film or digital camera onboard an aircraft. A few significant dates. The International Society for Photogrammetry (ISP), predecessor of ISPRS, was founded by E. Dolezal in Austria in 1910. In 1921 came introduction of the Autocartograph, the first universal analogue plotter. In 1932 Schermerhorn, famous founder of the International... (read more)

Mapping in Motion Workshop

Optech is to host the Mapping in Motion workshop at the ASPRS 2010 Annual Conference. The workshop will be held in San Diego, CA, USA, on 27th April 2010 from 1PM to 5PM. This year's Mapping in Motion workshop will include presentations and discussions on Optech's latest hardware and software innovations in airborne and mobile mapping products. Advances in mobile mapping are turning the traditional surveying and engineering workflows upside down. Optech will discuss strategies to manage large data sets, how to plan with Lynx software tools, and how to use surveying parameters to produce engineering-grade data. Optech has held... (read more)

Mapping Africa for Africa

Mapping Africa for Africa (MAFA) is a new initiative intended to accelerate the pace of geo-information activities in Africa and to be a catalyst for promoting the importance of geo-spatial information for decision support in the development of the continent. As a contribution to African renaissance, MAFA is expected to spearhead a plan of action providing the fundamental geo-spatial information/maps for sustainable development in support of projects under the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). MAFA results from the ‘Durban Statement on MAFA’ agreed at the International Cartographic Association conference held in South Africa in 2003. It presents recommendations and... (read more)

Florida Runway Expansion Mapping

Aerial Cartographics of America (ACA) is to perform mapping in support of a major runway expansion project at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. ACA will provide all digital mapping products required to complete expansion of Runway 9R/27L at the airport. ACA will provide new airport mapping products including colour ortho-imagery, an updated Airport Layout Plan (ALP) & Obstruction Survey, and planimetric updates for the airport and surrounding areas. In addition, ACA will perform low-altitude helicopter LAMP mapping of critical road connectors and an overall FAA-GIS Standards data conversion. These products will be used in support of expansion of the... Radar Mapping Services Contract

Intermap (USA) has announced a contract award of USD3.6 million from Dewberry & Davis for the third phase expansion of its previously announced airborne radar mapping services project in Alaska. Additional contract funding for this project may occur at future dates. Intermap is using its proprietary Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) technology to collect orthorectified radar imagery and high resolution elevation data for an area of Alaska that has never been mapped to this level of accuracy. The elevation data and imagery collected by Intermap will be used in economic development, infrastructure development and homeland security applications. Due to persistent... (read more)
