Univ. of Nottingham Creates Centre with OGC Interoperability Focus

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) (MD, USA) has announced that the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) is establishing a new multidisciplinary, post-graduate research centre focusing on geospatial interoperability. The Centre for Geospatial Science (CGS) will work closely with OGC in advancing research in geospatial interoperability, geo-intelligence and mobile location-based services. CGS will work with other research centres in helping to shape the OGC’s longer-term research objectives as well as providing technical and management related OGC training.

In April the University of Nottingham provided funding in excess of £1m for the establishment of the centre, which will also undertake sponsored research and joint programs with industry and government. In April, Mike Jackson, a member of the OGC board of directors since 2001, was appointed Professor of Geospatial Science. He currently serves as director of CGS, and was previously director of the Space Division at QinetiQ.

Based jointly within the Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy and the School of Geography, the new Centre has links with Computer Science and other departments. The Centre will soon have a research team of 12 post-doctoral and post-graduate researchers plus support staff.
