NYPD Leverages MapInfo Technology to Develop Real Time Crime Centre

MapInfo Corporation (NY, USA) has announced that its technology is a critical component of the New York Police Department's (NYPD) new Real Time Crime Centre.

With more than 12 million emergency calls and 1.3 million complaint and arrest records processed each year by the NYPD, the Real Time Crime Centre is a valuable crime fighting resource. The first of its kind, the technology nerve centre gives detectives instantaneous information on homicides and shootings citywide, enabling them to identify and respond to emerging crimes.

With MapInfo MapXtreme, police detectives are able to get detailed maps of the City precinct-by-precinct and track suspects to home addresses and locations where they are most likely to flee. Detectives are able to access data from a number of sources in real-time, allowing better identification of geographic relationships and patterns across the city.

Strategic mapping capabilities provide NYPD crime analysts with an intuitive way to analyse and view crimes by type and location. With the added location component, the Real Time Crime Center delivers critical information and visual analysis to detectives in seconds, helping the NYPD stop spikes in crime before they become trends, and assist in locating and apprehending criminals.

Before the Real Time Crime Centre, detectives had limited access to information about the possible locations of suspects and would spend hours, or even days, searching for the information. Now, police detectives can access this information in simply minutes via phone, fax, email or pager before they arrive at the crime scene.
