TERIA In the Rollout Phase

The real-time GPS Network implementation project, which was launched by the decision of the High Council of the French Order of Chartered Surveyors in April 2003, is entering its rollout phase.
After consultation with the major players in the market, the proposal from the Thales/Martec (France) business group was selected for the project. This involves implementing the network and maintaining it for five years from the date when service commences.
The TERIA network will enable users to locate themselves on the ground in real-time and with a degree of accuracy appropriate to their requirements (from the nearest metre to the nearest centimetre), anywhere and at any time. To do this, TERIA will send differential corrections to any GPS mobile, using the GSM or GRPS network as a transmission channel.
France and Corsica will be the first countries to roll out TERIA, with around a hundred stations. This rollout will be extended to cover the island of Reunion, where seven stations will be installed. A study into covering Guyana and the West Indies is currently underway.
Legal control of the network is provided by a civil partnership representative of the Order of Chartered Surveyors and its 18 Regional Councils. This civil partnership and the 551 chartered surveyors who joined the project and financed it (8 million euros) are linked within a commercial partnership called ‘EXAGONE’, run by a President and a Control Committee which will have the task of providing technical leadership and management.
TERIA will be operational at a national level in the first half of 2006. The validation zone will be operational in Autumn 2005 and will cover a fifth of France both sides of the Paris-Lyon axis.
