Supporting the Profession with Expertise, Proposals, Solutions and Platforms

GIM International interviews FIG President Rudolf Staiger
The FIG president holds one of the most influential positions in the surveying field and helps to shape the profession. The new president, Rudolf Staiger, was elected during the Istanbul Congress in 2018 and officially took office for a period of four years in November. In this interview, GIM International asks him about his views on the profession, now and in the future, and also about who Rudolf Staiger actually is. Congratulations on becoming the new president of FIG! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? Having grown up in the Black Forest in south Germany, I studied geodesy... (read more)

What Surveyors Value Most about Their Geodata Acquisition Method

There are numerous software solutions available on the market for the photogrammetric processing of digital images and to generate 3D spatial data. Geoprofessionals can use the photogrammetric software to create orthomosaics, point clouds and models. Some photogrammetric software solutions are suitable for large-format images from aerial cameras and satellite processing, while others are especially developed for small and medium-format digital images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’). The Pix4D and Agisoft PhotoScan software solutions are currently out in front, but many geospatial professionals also mentioned Inpho (Trimble), ContextCapture (Bentley), DroneDeploy, Photomod (Racurs), Correlator3D (SimActive) and SURE (nFrames) as... Point Clouds and Smart Cities

The Need for 3D Geodata and Geomatics Specialists
The ‘smart city’ concept entirely relies on a permanent stream of massive amounts of data acquired by a great variety of sensors distributed throughout the city. Smart use of all this data requires integration with 3D city maps for which point clouds, acquired by laser scanning or photogrammetry, are the main sources. The author of this article identifies the abilities of point clouds to support the smart city concept. The benefits of point clouds for monitoring urban processes were recognised quite early on. Back in the early 1990s, airborne Lidar could accurately provide the height component which is so important... (read more)

Which Photogrammetry Solutions Are Surveyors Waiting For?

Exploring the Demands of Geoprofessionals
Photogrammetry is a well-established technique for acquiring dense 3D geospatial information. In fact, the method is as old as modern photography, dating back to the mid-19th century. The science has continued to evolve over time, of course, and – especially in view of the recent advancements in computer vision and machine learning – the technology is no longer as simple as it may seem. Developers of photogrammetric equipment and software face the challenge of providing the mapping and surveying community with solutions that are sophisticated, yet also meet high customer expectations in terms of user-friendliness. At 'GIM International', we conducted... (read more)

Geneq Introduces New Multi-constellation GNSS Receiver for Survey

Geneq has announced the F90, a multi-constellation GNSS receiver with very high level of technology integration. The new product will fulfil the current surveyor’s demands in terms of performance, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. F90 tracks multi-constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou) and can maximise the acquisition and tracking process with all-in-view GNSS satellite frequencies. Providing maximum performance for accuracy and real-time measurements, F90 also supports RTK correction service, including RTX service that can get centimetre accuracy without a base station. The F90, with its advanced technology, ensures high performance even in harsh environments such as under heavy canopy. Combining GNSS, 4G, Bluetooth... (read more)

Mobile Lidar Systems Today and Tomorrow

The Promising Future of Mobile Mapping and Laser Scanning
Mobile Lidar systems (MLSs) are used with increasing frequency for three-dimensional (3D) mapping applications along various corridors because of their extreme ease in capturing high-resolution 3D topographic data. This article examines the current state of the mobile Lidar system market before looking ahead to the future scope for mobile mapping and laser scanning, including potential challenges that lie ahead. Mobile Lidar systems are frequently used for 3D mapping applications along various corridors because of their extreme ease in capturing comprehensive high-resolution 3D topographic data at normal speeds. An MLS observes a corridor and nearby objects in the form of their... (read more)

Advanced Image Processing in Browser

New GIS Platform for Satellite Image Search, Storing, Analysis and Visualisation
Most image analysis tasks that required ENVI or Erdas Imagine software are now available online thanks to EOS Platform, a new cloud service launched by Earth Observing System (EOS). It provides GIS professionals with a one-stop solution for search, analysis, storing and visualisation of large amounts of geospatial data. EOS Platform is an ecosystem of four mutually integrated EOS products, which together provide a powerful toolset for geospatial analysts. Image data obtained from LandViewer or uploaded from a user’s computer is stored in cloud-based EOS Storage and is instantly available for remote sensing analysis or image processing. EOS Processing offers... (read more)

Mapping the Seafloor with Remote Sensing and Satellite Imagery

An Analysis of the Techniques and Benefits of These Methods
70% of the Earth is covered by water, but so far just 7% of it has been surveyed (Mars, Venus and the Moon are better surveyed). Hydrography as a science has changed dramatically since the first measurements were made by Alexander Dalrymple and James Cook with lead lines and sextants. Singlebeam echosounders were invented in the 1920s – a technology still used today for mapping the seafloor. This method of using echosounders can produce very high-resolution bathymetric data but the high operational costs and the slow working process make it economically unsuitable for covering large areas. However, with the ongoing expenses of... (read more)

Accurate Georeferencing for UAV Surveying without Base Station

Klau Geomatics, specialised in post processed kinematic (PPK) direct georeferencing technology, has announced its new No-Base-Station high-accuracy georeferencing solution for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This innovative new solution is the result of close collaboration between Klau Geomatics and Hexagon’s Geosystems Division, enabling users to conduct UAV surveying projects without running a local GPS receiver, producing high-accuracy 3D survey data. In addition to accuracy, which is the most important feature of our georeferencing solution, is the simplified and efficient workflow. Users don’t need any survey equipment to place Ground Control Points (GCPs) or even a local base station for their PPK. They can... (read more)
