Towards Smaller and Smarter Solutions

Reflections on Intergeo 2019
Intergeo is a leading annual industry showcase where geospatial professionals gain an excellent impression of the latest innovations. On the brink of a new decade, Intergeo 2019 gave us a glimpse of the future. In general, we can conclude that solutions are getting smaller and smarter, and there are some new kids on the block. But with all the buzz around machine learning and artificial intelligence, how can we cut through the hype to get the most out of the rapidly advancing technology? One thing was crystal clear at this year’s Intergeo: the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or ‘drone’) has... (read more)

Correlator3D Used for Determining Financial Assistance after Hurricane Dorian

According to SimActive, a world-leading developer of photogrammetry software, Correlator3D has been used by Air Data Solutions (ADS) in Florida to determine financial assistance following Hurricane Dorian. Aerial imagery was collected before the storm for pre-hurricane assessment and afterwards for damage analysis. A Phase One 100MP aerial camera owned by ADS was flown to gather high-resolution images of the affected areas. The data was then processed by SimActive software to create mosaics of orthophotos. The resulting geospatial data helped government authorities to calculate recovery aid funds. “We have been impressed by the accuracy and speed of Correlator3D to support such... (read more)

Bluesky Launches MetroVista City Mapping Service

Aerial mapping company Bluesky has recently introduced its MetroVista city mapping service for Europe, based on data from the Leica CityMapper. At this year's Intergeo in Stuttgart, Bluesky showed the MetroVista imagery created from the hybrid airborne sensor that can simultaneously capture vertical and oblique aerial photography as well as Lidar. Bluesky’s MetroVista range includes impressive high-resolution imagery together with high-accuracy, wide-scale 3D models. The first in Europe, and still only one of a handful in operation around the globe, Bluesky’s CityMapper has already been used to capture MetroVista data for cities across the UK, including London, Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol.... GNSS Receivers – Evolution or Revolution?

Past, Present and Future of Positioning
Satellite surveying… are there any industry professionals out there not using it on (almost) a daily basis? Over the last 30 years, GNSS has become the main positioning instrument for most applications, writes Huibert-Jan Lekkerkerk. Of course, there are still some exceptions where correct (relative) positioning is needed and dedicated optical systems such as a total station or level instrument are used, but even these are often set up over control points determined using GNSS techniques. This article investigates the developments in GNSS over the last decade and attempts to predict the future. Around a decade ago, a review of... (read more)

ESA Leads Drive into 5G Positioning Future

A pair of testbed vehicles went out on the road in Germany to simulate the way we are all likely to be using 5G positioning services in the future. The field test focused on assessing the performance of highly precise ‘hybrid’ satellite/terrestrial positioning for autonomous vehicles, drones, smart cities and the Internet of Things. The two vehicles were driven for a week around Munich and the surrounding area in a variety of environments, from the open-sky terrain surrounding the German Aerospace Center DLR’s site in Oberpfaffenhofen to the deep urban canyons of the city’s dense Maxverstadt district. As they drove... (read more)
